This is a stunning mosaic. Because of all the iridescent tessera, its appearance changed hourly as the light in the room changed.
1) This mural was a long time coming. Funded entirely by the PNA's fundraising events and membership and stewarded by the Arts and Beautification Committee (ABC), this project was also helped by community volunteers who assisted Dana in assembling and installing it. It was truly a community led project.
2) The ABC had concerns about Alvin, who parked his truck in front of the benches everyday. He collects and recycles the cardboard on San Bruno Ave for money and we weren't sure if he would be aggressive. Dana thought that maybe we should pay him to help with the installation but we did not have the funds for that. She decided to add the backside mosaic depicting his red truck as an homage to him (this was outside of her proposal and she wasn't compensated for it). Upon seeing this inclusion, he cried. It's such a touching and beautiful act of kindness toward someone who is less fortunate than we all are and we need more of this in our lives. Thank you so much, Dana. DSC_3313

I've finished the sides and the front now. I'm using glitter tiles, vitreous tiles, beads, recycled glass tiles, bronze ball chain and marbles. I have to wait for the front to dry so I can flip it and work on the back.
I wonder what I should start on while I wait?

"Wish You Were Here" began with a piece of bumpy, red glass. It evolved into the first in a series of allegorical works to illustrate a children’s book currently in development. Beyond it’s most basic level, with the lonely angel fish as its focus, the piece represents the challenges we face as we travel the uncharted waters of our lives, often against the tide. A sculptural element added to the surface of the substrate enhances the movement of the under water setting and hides pieces of the menacing red fish, who represent our “unknowns”.
