Salen no more - The abandoned fishing trawlers at Salen on the Isle of Mull will be sailing no more.

A Hebridean tradition, boats are often left to decay on the shoreline where they come to rest at the end of their working lives. These is a melancholy beauty to these wrecks as they mark the passage of time, slowly rotting, crumbling to an ever perilous state of decay; hinting at an existence and former island life that once was.

Three attempts over three years it’s taken me to capture a mood befitting of these elegant wrecks.

This week's theme for Mosaic Montage Monday was More Maximal. Maximal is "More is More", so More Maximal is "More More Is More!" Can one have too many cameras?! Cameracore! HMMM!

This is another image from the morning shoot I did Downtown. I planned to just post one image from this shoot, which was a similar image using the telephoto to compress the tunnel of pink. I posted that if you want to see a few frames back in my photostream. This was just a b-frame image, just an exploratory shot while I set after the image I had in my head. But sometimes you don't know what you have when you have it. While looking through the images from that shoot to basically archive them and seal the vault, I realized that this image captured the classic Portland sign was in the frame, just to the right there. It also shows the Burnside bridge to the left, and oh yeah, a bunch of cherry blossoms. Huh. Well, If cropped a little, put this there, boosted that, and did this thing here...then this might make a cool panorama-looking shot, with the bridge on the left, the sign on the right, it was all just very classic Portland. How could I not have seen this before? This image rocks! Is it conceded to like your own images? Does Bono roll to U2 songs in his car when no one is around? My wife prefers the previous zoomed in shot, I like this one better. Let me know what you think. I dare to say there will be more pink gracing my Flickr before this Spring pink turns to green. Its just so...seductive. Yes, I said it, seductive.

Some more of the garden's Agapanthus

We got quite a bit more snow this weekend, but it's pretty much melted away. Gracie may look unimpressed but it's because I stopped her from playing in the fantastic white stuff to take her photo.

Diamond Beach, Iceland

For anyone who has been to iceland (or researched going) Diamond beach is one of the most iconic locations in a country full of them. Togs dream of having the beach to themselves with pristine sand, a good selection of ‘diamonds’, nice wave action and beautiful light.

Well I got some of those but not all!

Day 2 of the workshop saw us starting at Skogafoss and Kevernufoss waterfalls and then driving 3+ hours to Diamond Beach for sunset. For the last hour of the trip I was looking out the side window at a thin gap between the horizon and a band of cloud with the sun behind it. With no sign of the gap closing my excitement for some soft orange light increased the closer we got to Diamond beach. Unfortunately my ‘anxiety’ also increased as the clock ticked ever onwards towards sunset. It’s at times like this I regretted not being the master of my own destiny and able to just avoid stopping for a lunch break on-route.

We pulled into the car park with about 15mins to go to sunset so it was a case of jumping out, grabbing my bag and tripod and zooming off to a relatively lightly diamond studded beach with lots of people tramping over the sand☹️.

The sun was touching the horizon by the time I reached the beach so I had almost no time to pick my diamond but was looking for one of the transparent diamonds to get the orange light shining through it.

I managed to get 3 quick shots off before the sun disappeared of which this was one. I have used a ‘lens blur’ filter to simulate a narrow depth of field to help remove the distractions of footprints and peoples legs. With more time I might have found a similar diamond near the water and got a cleaner shot but to my mind it’s better to have shot before the sun set rather than compose a better shot and have missed it!

I find consolation in Hölderlin’s words: “What we are here, yonder, a God is able to complete.” I put this together with T. S. Eliot’s deep intuition: “What might have been and what has been Point to one end, which is always present.”

The more I ponder these poetic insights, the more I come to trust that all positive efforts are somehow finding completion in a timeless realm. I cannot give any evidence of this, but the good, the true, the beautiful is, in its essence, not subject to time. All that we sacrifice for the true, the beautiful, and the good, all the effort we expend out of love, cannot be lost. What can I say? We need this conviction or else we would despair.
