A SLUMBER DID MY SPIRIT SEALl - By William Wordsworth
A slumber did my spirit seal;
I had no human fears:
She seemed a thing that could not feel
The touch of earthly years.
No motion has she now, no force;
She neither hears nor sees;
Rolled round in earth's diurnal course,
With rocks, and stones, and trees.

Detail from: ‘Arboretum by Flashbulb’ 1942 Stuart Davis. American, 1892-1964
Oil on canvas
Edith and Milton Lowenthal Collection, Bequest of Edith Abrahamsom Lowenthal, 1991 1992.24.2
This composition embodies the syncopated rhythms of American jazz and the dynamism of modern life. Working with a limited palette of just five colors, plus black and white, the artist produced a tour-de-force of patterns, shapes, color combinations, and spatial ambiguities. Abstracted almost beyond recognition, the image is based on a garden, momentarily illuminated by the yellow-and-red light of a camera flash.
From the placard: Metropolitan Museum of Art.
