SS Obergruppenfuhrer /governor of Bohemia and Moravia/ Dr. Karl Hermann Frank demonstrating his "paint splashing" method several days before his appointment with the hangman.

After his arrest, he was supposedly requested to "white wash" his cell, frustrated with the assignment he was observed to have splashed the walls and floor with paint from his brush. This method of painting caused a sensation and Frank was allowed a demonstration of method on a specially erected platform in the Sekyrama auditorium in Pankrac where he was photographed.

Six month later, American painter Jackson Pollock was hailed as the inventor of this method of painting.

p.s. the splash shown on his left arm was supposed to have come from a beating, but later confirmed that it was paint.

Nach längerem Hinsehen auf das Bild "flimmern" die dünnen schwar-weißen Streifen.

*detail from a new set in progress consisting of aprox. twenty panels on illustration boards ea. measuring 20" X 30" when placed together will make one large painting. I am doing these separately due to lack of working space.

p.s. on a note of interest; having spend so many years practicing the loose "macanudo" art of Central America, it makes it difficult to slip into what is at hand coming out entirely different from my original sketches. Even more difficult to keep one's mind on one subject in advanced age.

The above is influenced by the music of Panama, my beloved adopted country.

I spotted these strange statues on the way to the museum and snapped some pictures on the way home. I find them rather disturbing - a crowd of giant, hollow half people.

Anyone know what this is?

Giclée Print (2005) ( by Michael Thompson)

The inspiration for this piece comes from construction steel with its modern clean lines and rust colored finish. The type you see hoisted up by gantry cranes to create the frames of mega structures and skyscrapers; with the look of unpolished burnt orange which comes form oxidation and exposure to the elements. This is what i try to capture here. If you can imagine them stacked and juxtaposed with varying shades of colors.

Another lazy blip, unfortunately not capturing the gorgeous sunny weather outside, but rather a funny moment inside Modern Art Oxford. We'd popped in quickly on our way to afternoon tea on the Ashmolean roof terrace; at this point watching a video installation. Not sure if you can make the faces out, but they looked pretty bemused!

This building was originally constructed as someones town house!!!!...phew...

*painted in the rich style of abstract art inspired by Hipolito. From a quote by abstract painter, writer and deceased friend, Agustin Hipolito "hippo" when asked how his art went, he responded: "sometimes I feel that painting abstract is like placing messges in sealed bottles and dropping them into the sea, hoping that some day, someone will find them, uncork them and enjoy them as a fine bottle of wine"

from another time, in reference to abstract art he said: "the problem with our "salvajes" /primitive, native people/ of Panama, is that they lack the sensitivity, intelligence or desire to study the message I offer them in making art. The only art they understand is the savage art which reflects their ancestors way of demented life styles, namely "arte macanudo"

p.s. notes from my diaries.

p.s. 2,

Hipolito, also possessed a great talent for the double meaning of words in prose which he wrote on his beloved "Remington" and shared with his friends.

Only few were ever published in mimeograph form.

His paintings hardly ever sold, were shown in cantinas and coffee houses. His one time exhibit of his abstracts was held in Medellin, Colombia, a local art "critic" called them "trashy reproductions of real abstract art, a product of negligence and haste, not good enough to wipe my ... with. Hipolito died in 1987 at the age 76, in Asuncion, I am told that he is buried in a unmarked grave. Some say he served time for some petty thefts, I say, he served time for having opened his mouth critisizing the criminal element ruling the "Banana Republics" of the 70's
