MMT’s Stryker Turn is only about 7 miles south of Eureka as it trundles over Tobacco Road in Dahlberg. Soon it will arrive, drop its centerbeams and be ready to call it quits for the day.
At the Edinburg Gap aid station (mile 76) David Horton helps prepare Bethany Patterson's pacer for the final 25 miles.
As the sun went down, I used a flash for a few photos, but then decided that that was just too annoying for the runners. I spent the rest of the night shooting with my Sigma 30mm f/1.4. There was a bonfire, two lanterns, some lights by the aid table and headlamps. The shots I could get depended on where folks happened to be standing. When I started looking at the shots after the race, I realized that putting my flash away was my best decision all weekend. I'm nowhere near a skilled enough photographer to hope to get a shot like this. I could only get this through pure dumb luck.

I spent a weekend in the Massanutten Mountains shooting the Massanutten Mountain Trail 100 Mile Endurance Run (MMT, for short). Racers have 36 hours to cover 100 rugged miles through the mountains by foot. I can tell you from experience, no matter how tough you are, this race will kick you ass and call you Sally. Sue broke the course record for women at MMT this year, running about 9 hours faster than me in 22: something. She is not only a tough as nails runner, she is real, and she is really funny, too.
