Mistletoe
Widforss trail, North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park
Elevation ~ 2470 meters (8100 feet), early morning
I'm known as Mistletoe in some circles, so here's the gratuitous pic. I look so deformed. Diffuse Glow hides all sins though.
You guys are so clever. These round things are indeed mistletoes. Actually I had never seen mistletoes growing on trees like this. Now I have learned that they are evergreen "half-parasites." By the way, take a look at the previous pic in its original size and you will be able to see the birds resting on the branches. Again I have no idea what those birds are called. Anyone?

"The Mistletoe bough in the olden time was honoured by many a sacred rhyme
By bards and singers of high degree when cut from the bough of an old oak tree."
We this was on a wind-felled apple tree but it was an excuse to quote from the beautiful Steeleye Span album 'Winter' the song - Mistletoe Bough.

Mistletoe. The Sacred goulden bough of Mythology, Mistletoe is a mysterious plant, the subject of poem, song, and letend. Its sacred nature is attributable to many factors. It growns only in the sky, and never on the grownd, so is closer to the Heavens, it is propagated by birds, themeseleves symbolic messengers of the Gods. Druids traditionally harvest mistletoe with a golden sickle, a magical tool that represents the sun. It is vital that the plant is not tainted by contact with the ground and care is taken to make sure that it keeps its airy allciations intact. It is caught in sheets that are streatched taut around the tree.
As an evergreen, mistletoe symbolizes longevity and immortality, and has become a traditional part of Christmas decorations in the home. However, although holly and ivy have managed to cloak their pre-cristian significance in order to enfold themselves into the mythology of the church, it has been harder for mistletoe to do the same. The plant is an uncomfortable reminder of powerful pre-cristian practices and belife, and is fanned in many churches.Despite this, Mistletoe is sometimes called lignum asnctae crucis since the church said at one time that the cross of Christ had been made of its wood..
Initially, people hung mistletoe indoors to ward of evil spirites. The tradition of kissing under the mistletoe is a remnant of its potency as a fertility symbol, and because of the tiny little "x" symbol found on the underside of the berrys.
Found in a 50ยข "junk" box at an estate sale the other day. I pissed a lady off because it was in a hallway on a closet floor and I had ass in the air digging through the bottom of the box looking for the missing berries and no one could get past. Hee hee.
Jeez, I have really crossed the threshold and become my mother not caring what people think. But really kids, I wouldn't get nasty with someone for doing the same thing. Would you?
