This man is a U.S. Army veteran of the pivotal battle of the closing days of WWII that Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower called the "Miracle of Remagen."

On March 7, 1945, advance elements of the 9th U.S. Armored Division captured the Ludendorff Railway Bridge in Remagen, Germany -- the last bridge across the Rhine river to remain standing as allied forces advanced toward Berlin. Despite desperate German efforts to demolish the bridge to stall the allied advance, the bridge was taken by American forces -- a victory that was credited with shortening the war by about two months, saving untold lives in the process.

The photo was taken in May 2000, at the site where the bridge used to stand, during a ceremony to commemorate the 55th anniversary of the battle. The ceremony was attended by both German and American veterans.

Mixed emotions today, with the death of Israeli symbol in singing.

Arik Einstein. He will always be remembered for his wonderful songs.

Surely his songs will live forever with us.

All this sad morning, I hear his songs at the "GALGALTZ", my favorite radio.

bought a new-to-me chair and ottoman and she likes both-- evidenced by the cat hair she's already laid down. also notice that being a substantial cat, she's managed to create a divot in the back cushion, that fits her just right ~grin~

I was just on my way out the door when I saw that my long-awaited monarch was eclosing! I grabbed a camera and wedged it in the enclosure and managed some shots as he was emerging. What an amazingly cool thing to witness. Not great quality photos, but shows the process.

Every time I go to this place, it looks different. And you can see the difference. This is the same place as yesterday's photo. The water flow has changed the whole look of the place. Maybe, if there was this flow all through the year, we probably would not pay attention to the rocks there! It's just a matter of paying attention. How true!

I've been looking for a new butterfly to show up here but without much luck.

Yesterday, we got home from working in the woods and my work shoes were soaked so I put them out in the sun to dry. When I went back to get them later, this Viceroy butterfly had fallen in love with them. It walked all over them, fluttered in the air and landed on a another part, investigated that, flew away, came back. Even after I took the shoes in the house, it came back again and again looking for them.

Believe me, their's a huge difference between the smell of my two year old work shoes and a flower.

We must not allow the clock and the calendar to blind us to the fact that each moment of life is a miracle and mystery.

This was a miracle shot on a number of levels but best of all you can see Mercury both outlined against the Sun and the atmosphere lit round Mercury clear of the Sun as well.

Today's transit of Mercury is the last until 2032 and realistically my likely last chance at capturing the start of a Mercury transit (I missed the last one by three minutes!).

Normally I have a very stable set up for solar observations but this transit happened at an angle and time when I couldn't use my permanent kit. Instead I was using lightweight mobile kit which I had used for the 2016 transit. For whatever reason everything in sight went wrong although I'd allowed a full two hours to get everything set. I found myself only minutes away from the start with an unbalanced 70mm refractor that kept slipping on the mount foot, a ball mount that was struggling to take the weight and a tracking mount that wouldn't engage gear without slipping on the clutch, not to mention gusts of wind rocking the kit and scudding cloud blotting out the Sun at regular intervals.

In the end I was manually correcting alignment errors and supporting the scope while trying to find the Sun and set up the camera. Two minutes before the start of transit I found the Sun only for some cloud to obscure it, but by sheer luck (no skill involved!) the cloud cleared and I was holding it steadily enough and long enough in focus to take a few brief sequences before I lost it all again. This is probably the best capture from those short image sequences.

This is a cropped image of the best 50% of 1200 frames at 100fps. Taken just after first contact at around 12:36:40-50

A relieved Peter!
