do any human beings ever realize life while they live it--every, every minute?
no...The saints and poets, maybe they do some.
film from summer
Amtrak 334 was zipping through Deerfield on a nice cold morning along the C&M. The Salute Our Veterans Cabbage Car was leading the Chicago-bound Hiawatha as the sun popped off the windshield.
The Patriotic Cabbage Car was running opposite track as it was running around a Belt-bound Wissor grain train which had just cleared this location a minute or so earlier.
After reviewing the 3 minute edit I did of this previous shot I decided this version looked more like what I saw. With that said this is NS train 736 flying through an impressive rock cut in Woodville, Alabama. The train is one of the several per day that run to the Georgia power plant scherer fom the powder river basin with BNSF power. The train is passing through the lower elevations of the Blue Ridge Mountains as evidenced here.
A last-minute picture tonight, although I had my “insurance” shot from this morning I was keen to add another urban mono to the series so took this a few minutes before locking up for the night.
This was the victor in the battle (previous posting) between the two large Grizzly Bear (Ursus arctos horribilis) males challenging each other for breeding rights in the area. This fight lasted for awhile and was quite loud and aggressive by both bears. The loser sustained some wounds during the fight and was observed limping from the area. It was observed again several days later. These were observed while on a guided photographic trip along the shores of the K'tzim-a-deen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary in the Khutzeymateen Inlet along the west coast north of Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada.
The inlet is about a 30 minute flight by float plane, north of Prince Rupert. The tour of 6 wildlife photographers (including myself) was 5 days long and run by Ocean Light II Adventures. We stayed at the entrance of the reserve in a 72 ft sail boat (Ocean Light II) and accessed the reserve daily in a 19 ft Zodiac and spent most of the day looking for grizzly bear activity.
The guide had been operating in the area for over thirty years and this was the first fight between two males that he had witnessed. We were extremely lucky to have observed and photographed such behaviour in wild grizzlies.
As you can see this old male has been in a lot of scraps over the years.

how can I one minute be cooking potatoe waffles and turkey dinasours for the kids and then the next time be acting like some sexy seductress!!! Strange combination I know!!!!
Part of me thinks it's wrong to do pics like this and then the other part of me says "och who gives a stuff". My last picture Flick r Hair is a perfect example of how you can turn a picture into something else by using your imagination. So although it may look as though I'm up to saucy things, I'm really shouting at the kids to get out of the frame.

Haven't been taking photographs lately; these are images from the vaults. Self-portrait in fisherman's sweater.
Many Australians like to trash Canberra, but it is a most amazing place to live if you ever have the chance. Canberran people always live near beautiful wildlife reserves which have been incorporated into the city planning from the 1920s to today.
This means that you can wake up in the early morning and be guaranteed to see some amazing wildlife within a 15 minute walk from home. Large groups of kangaroos live in the reserves throughout Canberra.
Here's a female brimstone butterfly (Gonepteryx rhamni) using its long proboscis to get the sweet nectar out of a thistle at Stensjödal in Tyresta National Park. Do zoom in on the eye - it looks very cool with that marble effect.
A shot of the same butterfly girl, but more from the side and with a ant next to it as well as a minute wasp which has landed on the wing can be found here: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/48266948742/
This is in Sines, Alentejo, Portugal at the north shore. After about 1 hour of shooting some photos with my daughter I got this 13 sec. long exposure. Here the sky was almost still but the ocean waves were hitting the rocks, creating this smooth water surface, and without "stretching" the clouds, I could keep the texture and colors that I find so appealing.

The North America Nebula, photographed from my backyard, is an emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus, 2200 light years from Earth. The shape of the nebula resembles that of the continent of North America, complete with a prominent Gulf of Mexico.
