A topical livery at the moment. 56099 passing another Grid going the other way with empties through Arpley Yard with a Healey Mills - Fidlers Ferry MGR 36 years ago on 1st May 1986
92004 'Jane Austen' attacks Shap at a freezing Greenholme with a rake of MGR's which I think was a Walton Old Jn - Carlisle working though I stand corrected. 15 December 1999.
20106 and partner with an empty MGR train off the Erewash Valley line, heading north at Clay Cross South Junction , Summer 1989
56016 nearing Fidlers Ferry PS with a loaded MGR from Healey Mills and with the peg off for the Power Station crossover, 7 April 1983.
Red Stripe 56068 at Monks Sidings, a shot only possible in high summer from the north side but I have to live with the shadows, Healey Mills -Fiddlers Ferry loaded MGR on 25 July 1988. It's probably a forest now.
47212 has a heavy MGR behind it, the train had been checked at Denaby Crossing and was now accelerating, producing a cloud of smoke as it does. All around are the decaying signs of industry in the final stages of use, the weather is suitably dull and misty.
D1862 was built at Crewe and entered service 13/05/1965 at 41A Tinsley, it became 47212 under TOPS in February 1974. The loco was never renumbered and did not carry any names, it was withdrawn 31/01/2004 and by 28/02/2004 it had met its maker, literally because it was cut at Crewe Loco Works by R. Garrett.

Editing notes: Class 37 removed from behind the 2nd wagon & shiny buffers darkened.
40 years ago today a friend and I caught the then X48 Sheffield to Manchester bus to Woodhead in the hope of catching some Class 76 action in the couple of hours we were going to be there before the bus would return to Sheffield. As it turned out, the weather was very grey and miserable (unlike today) and we only saw One West bound train before it was time to 'leggit' up to the road for the bus home. But, just before 8 p.m as we waited, we were rewarded with an East bound empty MGR climbing towards the Tunnel - 76021 working solo with a string of 26 HAA hoppers, bound for Wath ? who knows.
So armed with only with Dads old Agfa camera with a maximum shutter speed of 1/200th sec is my record shot taken from the roadside on 13th July 1981.
This was to be the last working I photographed, with the line closing Four days later....

58019"Shirebrook Colliery" pulls out of Old Bank Sidings ,Toton ,on 02/May/1997 with a loaded MGR to Ratcliffe P.S.
Lawley Street freightliner depot was sometimes used by Didcot to Toton empty MGR trains to stable overnight, 56084 is doing just that. The train will be away at dawn to collect another load of power station coal from one of the many pits in the Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire coal fields.
Such a thing would not happen now, this was when it was all BR and freightliner had a small 'f', I dread to think of the red tape involved in leaving a coal train in a Freightliner depot now.
The picture was taken from the car park at Saltley power box on a misty evening,
56084 was built at Doncaster Works, it entered service 26/10/1980. The loco was withdrawn in March 2009 and cut by C.F. Booth (Rotherham)
A black and white has been seen before, I have only just found the colour slide.

The impact of mining subsidence on the Coalville line railway infrastructure is clear to see in this view taken in November 1983 of BR 56053 recorded approaching Moira West Junction with an empty MGR formation heading for reloading at one of the local opencast coal disposal points.

31261 and 31116 are arriving at Denby with an empty MGR, they are about to enter the yard.. As with Coxbench station Denby station closed 01/06/1930, but under the weed growth the platform is just about in situ.
The day has bitter-sweet memories for me, I had bought the first brand new motorcycle I had owned since a Raleigh moped in 1971 it was a BMW R80 and this was my first (and last) long trip. I hated it, the vibration was not nice and I didn't like the handling a lot either, after only four weeks of ownership I traded it for a used K100 BMW "flying brick" it was superb and stayed with me for three years.
31261 was built as D5689 it entered service new to Sheffield Darnall. The loco was withdrawn 05/01/1987 and cut at Stratford depot in November 1990
31116 was built as D5534, it entered service new to March depot 11/06/1959, although older than 31216 it was not withdrawn until 04/02/2000, it was cut by T.J. Thomson (Stockton) in July 2003

A big thank you to Mr Gee and the stewards, crew etc for pulling this one off and persevering into the early hours to ensure we got all the planned shots, well worth the 0230 arrival at home...
Consecutively numbered 76012 & 76013 are approaching Dinting station with an empty MGR which would have taken coal to Fiddlers Ferry power station., the train is crossing Dinting viaduct.

An image taken at Pengam Junction on a Saturday morning in May 1990, where the 6C85 07:10 MGR empties from Aberthaw Reception Sidings was snaking its way into the No. 2 reception line adjacent to the Freightliner terminal. BR 37897 would then complete a run round and then deliver the hoppers to Cardiff Tidal Sidings, from where they would be moved to Cardiff Docks for loading.
