The sun sets behind Lanai, as seen from just below Lahaina at day's end on Maui.
Typical for winter in Hawaii, both the air and water temperatures were in the high 70's. We had a wonderful 8 days with almost our whole family, including 6 grandkids. Everyone had a great time, and no one wanted to come home! This is the view from the back of our condo at Puamana. If you have a good eye, you can see two whales spouting far in the distance. See the note on the picture.

This was taken from the beach at Ka'anapali Beach Club, just north of Ka'anapali Beach on Maui. The island on the horizon at the right (hiding in the clouds) is Molokai.
Jet lag put me to bed at 7:30pm on my first night in Maui, and I awoke at 1am, so bored, I went out onto the lanai and watched the moon and the waves, and when I noticed that the moon was on it's way out of the sky, it occurred to me (duh) to grab my camera and get some long exposure moonset shots.
This was a photo I made from the North Shore on Maui back in January. There was some great surfing earlier in the day but by the time we got back it was a little too rough and everyone had got out of the water.
For our vacation to Maui (without the kids!), we decided to pick up an underwater point-and-shoot to play with. We settled on the Canon PowerShot D10. I'm so glad we got it!
It was tough to use at first... You have to look past any water drops or fog in your mask at a small LCD screen, and it can be really tough to make out what the camera is actually pointed at. And, to make an interesting composition, I think a lot of the time you want to get down close to the ground and shoot up at the fish, so that you have the blue ocean as your background and not the sea-bottom. So you have to hold your breath, swim down (fighting the salt water and your bouyant gear to stay down), try to hold the camera steady, and make out the composition on the screen. Yeah, it's as hard as it sounds.
I feel like I've started to get the hang of it, though (for one, I've found it's easier in deeper water), and I think this shot proves it's worth the effort :).
