Originally known as the Mason City & Clear Lake Railway, the Iowa Traction Railway is the last electric interurban railroad left in the United States. Founded in 1886, it has been a freight-only carrier since 1937. It was purchased by a General Motors executive in 1960 and renamed the Iowa Terminal Railway. It was sold and renamed as the Iowa Traction Railway in 1987. It continues to serve a number of customers on Mason City's south side and interchanges with Union Pacific and Canadian Pacific trackage.
Pictured here is one of the Baldwin-Westinghouse steeple-cab locomotives still in use by the railway.
