The first male Red Mason bee of the year in our garden on the bee hotel. The Red Mason Bees are solitary bees that live in aggregations, but each bee is working for itself. They use holes such as hollow plant stems, or holes in walls and wood to lay their eggs. Each female bee provisions the cavity with pollen, and when she has collected enough she will lay an egg and seal the nest chamber. Mason Bees seal the entrance with mud. When the egg hatches, the tiny 1.5mm larvae eats the stored pollen. The larvae pupate in the late summer and overwinter as fully developed adults, wrapped up in a protective cocoon. Red Mason Bees have a single flight period, from spring usually coinciding with the flowering of Apple Blossom. The male Red Mason bees emerge first and tend to wait in the area waiting for the females to emerge. The females tend to emerge anywhere between several days to two weeks after the first male.
These emerged a few days ago, but they disappeared when the weather took a turn for the worse. Today was really nice and warm and got up to 62F. The bees were out again! There are several sub-species of mason bees, not all of them are the shiny green you usually see in photos.. They don't have hives, but instead nest in holes...either those made for them in "bee houses" that humans provide, or holes found in nature. Each female bee makes her own nest, and lays and cares for her own eggs.
It's been so warm that my Blue Mason Bees are hatching.
Tech Specs: Canon 90D (F11, 1/125, ISO 200) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (set to 2x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT (E-TTL mode, -1 FEC). This is a single frame taken hand held. In post I used Topaz Photo and Clarity in that order. ISO and shutter set to expose for the natural light in the background.

Mason Lake is a pretty lake in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, reached by hiking the Ira Spring Trail from Interstate 90 east of Seattle. I camped there for a night and took this picture while sitting on a rock enjoying the evening light.

Fortnum and Mason - London, UK.
Looking up towards the new glass-domed atrium of Fortnum and Mason. This iconic British store goes all the way back to 1707. It had just been currently refurbished at a cost of £24 million, and now it has an impressive new central atrium and a sweeping grand spiral staircase. Not bad for a 300-year old department store.

The bad weather is really making it tough for the local pollinators. I was shooting this waterlogged Mason Bee when he started cleaning the water off of his fur.

The George Mason Memorial is a memorial to Founding Father George Mason, the author of the Virginia Declaration of Rights that inspired the United States Bill of Rights. The Memorial is located in West Potomac Park within Washington, D.C. at 24 E Basin Drive SW, which is a part of the Tidal Basin. Authorized in 1990, with a groundbreaking in 2000 and dedication in 2002, the memorial includes a sculpture of Mason, a pool, trellis, circular hedges, and numerous inscriptions. It was the first memorial in the Tidal Basin area to be dedicated to someone who was not a former President of the United States .

From a recent press/promo photo shoot for Mason Bach. Considering that it was rounding on -20C that night, with the wind whipping around us at 20-30mph, he was a real trooper.
Shot in an alley off Shaw St. (Toronto) using an AB800 in a Westcott Apollo 28-inch softbox, plus a barebulb AB400 behind him lighting the wall. Both lights were plugged into the Vagabond II which was sitting in the back of a van in an attempt to keep it warm. Triggered with PocketWizards.
The Mason depot is a tough one to shoot but after months of looking at it I finally found something that works. Over the years the depot has gone through some renovations, remodels and upgrades and turned into a restaurant so heating and cooling was added to the track side of the building making it impossible to shoot. leaving just this angle open. I cooked the shot a bit with the two further flashes but this was a damn difficult angle to pull off to avoid shadows. Here the night train to Jackson departs Mason with traffic for the NS.
