This statue of Nelson Mandela looks weirdly like a zombie about to attack the Houses of Parliament.

The sculpture of Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) is by Ian Walters and was commissioned by the Greater London Council. It was unveiled in 1985 by ANC president Oliver Tambo.

Mapello (BG) - Italy - 2015

I originally uploaded this photo in January of 2016, during PVL233's last days as a London service bus.

Since then it has been sold on to Seaford & District and now carries the registration Y24 SEA, and interestingly, it carries the fleet code PVL24, with sister vehicle (former PVL232) being PVL23.

PVL233 was first based at New Cross, being allocated to route 171, refurbished in 2006/07 upon contract renewal, and was made redundant by the specification of new Volvo B9TL WVLs for the 171's current contract from 2011.

It managed to survive almost 5 years into the 171's current contract, moving to Stockwell along with many others in its fleet to take up service on various routes, replacing slightly older PVLs. Later in 2013 it moved to Mandela Way with PVL232 to work on the 453.

PVL233 was kept well, sounded healthy, and performed modestly, with a notably sweet sounding transmission. It stood apart from the 453's Enviro 400s, but seemed to fit quite nicely with the VWLs on the no. 1, though it didn't get a chance to run on the no.1 until late 2014.

The reason for re-uploading this photo (besides nostalgia) was because I managed to improve the quality slightly. It's sharper than the original, with better colour saturation, though admittedly the difference is barely noticeable on Flickr.

Out of all the photos I've taken with my 7 year old iPhone, this is certainly one of the better ones, and one of my favourites.

WIT

The Statue of Nelson Mandela in the museum area of my city was standing in a burning sun. I only had my phone with me, and the result was a bit weird, so in Lightroom I hit a lot of sliders and ended up with this artist impression of the statue and the (boring) surroundings.

My first true mandela I think. I used watercolor pencils to add a bit of spark.

Nelson Mandela became the first black president of South Africa in 1994, serving until 1999.

A symbol of global peacemaking, he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

God Bless you and God help us now that you are gone. Here are a few snaps I took on June 30, 1990 in Oakland, less than 4 months after he been freed from 27 years in Robben Island, my whole life at that time.. We carry you in our hearts always.

"Man a man has done what he considers to be his duty to the people and his country, he can rest in peace. I believe I have made that effort and that is, therefore, why I will sleep for the eternity"- Nelson Mandela.

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (July 18, 1918 – December 5, 2013)

"Strive constantly to serve the welfare of the world; by devotion to selfless work one attains the supreme goal of life. Do your work with the welfare of others always in mind. … The ignorant work for their own profit; the wise work for the welfare of the world, without thought for themselves. … Perform all work carefully, guided by compassion."

The Bhagavad Gita

“For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” Nelson Mandela

"If you are negotiating you must do so in a spirit of reconciliation, not from the point of view of issuing ultimatums." ~ Nelson Mandela, addressing the media after a meeting with President FW De Klerk.

This is a blade that cuts both ways. If we expect to succeed in "saving Flickr", we need to understand Yahoo's goals for these radical changes, and find the ways to achieve those goals without sacrificing our stake in Flickr. Lets all move forward from Black Day with reconciliation in our hearts and creative compromise in our minds.

There was a lovely little incident when we were there.

To see the profile, there is an exact spot in front of a plaque that you stand on. A family ahead of us kept saying to their mom, "Do you see his face?" Then they realized she was looking for it on the plaque, and they had to tell her to look up at statue. We all had a good laugh, and she took it in good spirit.
