My son conducted an experiment to determine if his camera memory card would be affected by magnets. He submitted the results for his science fair project this year. What he found was worth sharing. Full writeup of the results are on my blog @ geeklens.blogspot
All the parts. Top and bottom blocks are walnut, 1" by 1.25" by 5" long. Dowels are walnut, 1/2" by 5" long. String is 100 pound test braided fishing line made from Spectra. Magnets are from www.amazingmagnets.com:
CHa500D - 1/2" cube magnet, with 1/8" hole
R500D - 1/2" dia. x 1/2" long rod magnet
i found teeny eyelets in the colors of my logo. that made me geeky happy.
then i slid them nicely inside brown paper bag envelopes that i made from grocery bags according to type. i can be organized.

America Online has been sending out a new mailer. It's constructed of fairly sturdy cardboard, and has a magnet to snap the case shut.
I have to give my sister credit. When I was at her apartment a few weeks ago, she showed me a tiny but surprisingly powerful magnet on her fridge; it was the magnet from one of these mailers!

I'm a sucker for seascapes, living in Christchurch you dont get many good sunset shoots unless you travel. Magent Bay is on the south side of Banks Peninsula and a great spot for a surf, luckily its also a good spot to try and capture a sunset. I arrived a little late after getting distracted by the light somewhere further back on the road. A short sprint across tricky boulders, throw on a couple of filters whack the tripod up (no honestly its finely crafted and considered for hours, delicately metered and all that) and I managed to grab a handful of frames before the light disappeared entirely. 3 hour round trip , not quite the results I was after but then not too shabby.

The Zen Magnet is attached to raw iron discharge from a blast furnace. You can see some of the iron slag flakes stuck to the top of the magnet.
I like the general idea of this shot, but I would like to plan the reflection more carefully and pay a bit more attention to my camera settings next time.

I was waiting at the crosswalk, sort of caught in that spring fugue (when you're so used to winter that every time you step outside it makes you stop and breathe deep for a second) when I noticed that several teenagers who walked past this car either slowed down, circled back or walked around it, glancing backwards.
When I saw the kid on the skateboard come towards it, I got my camera out in case it lured him in as well. It did :) He slowed down and then circled back. He skated away slowly, peered back twice, shook his head. I swear I could hear the sigh.
Made me smile all the way home. Made me smile again when I was cleaning off my CF cards tonight and found it - completely forgotten.
