Even though the Log Cabin block is simple and full of potential, I was dreading it because it can be tricksy.

After playing around with some ideas using 4 blocks and 16 blocks and finding nothing to be outstanding, I took a second look and the Log Cabin block looked like a stack of books to me.

I decided to use the Cherrywood orange for this project when I got excited about the yarn dyed plaid and 2 lovely prints I uncovered after I did a second dig in the stash I inherited from my Grandmother.

I made my 20" Log Cabin block offset so the "books" would be prominent. Adding the machine embroidered titles made the "logs" appear as "books" and including the machine appliqued cat bookend helped make the books look stacked on a shelf.

The selected titles are some of my very favorite novels and the arrangement was based on the fabric choices as well as the layout of the titles on the book spines.

When thinking about including a bookend, I wanted it to be something that I would actually want on my book shelf. I have 4 cats and though none of them are an orange tabby, the Sassy Cat hand embroidery design from Urban Threads that I digitized into an applique was the purrfect choice.

With all of the additional machine embroidery, I needed to keep the quilting simple so the titles would remain legible. So, I went with diagonal stitching matching the angle of the bookend.

This log pile is 75 feet long and was used to melt the copper but the bricks used to make the smelter melted before the copper. This is located at the Copper Globe Mine in the San Rafael Swell. It is located 10 miles south of I-70, and contains an historic underground metal mine. The mine was worked periodically from its discovery prior to 1900 up to World War II.

Log shelter at Matthiessen State Park, in Illinois

ready for the winter

All week, I have heard the sound of chain saws and heavy equipment next door. This afternoon, I finally took my camera and went to investigate. As I made my way through the woods behind our house, I saw footprints and broken ferns showing where men had tramped to find the property line. On the other side of the property line, this is what I saw.

This mine thrived from around 1910 to around 1942. Why 1942? President Roosevelt issued executive order 208 which banned the mining of non-strategic materials during WW2. Miners had to produce silver, lead, and zinc instead. Since this mine was the largest producer of gold in California during this time it was shut down.

I'm waiting for the paint to dry on the rest of the order. I made sure to start one early so that I'd have at least one finished by midnight.

Petrified log captured at the Petrified Forest NP, northeastern Arizona. Petrified logs are fossils created by replacement of organic matter over time by mineral matter, primarily silica. The colors are determined by the minerals; red, yellow and brown from iron, blue and green from cobalt and chromium, black from carbon and manganese.
