The North Walsham and Dilham Canal, opened in 1826, was never a great success. From the size of this lock (at Ebridge Mill on the Happisburgh Road), it must have cost a king's ransom to build (by deepening and widening the River Ant) as the gradients may be among the steepest in Norfolk (North Walsham is on a hill).
It has been neglected since the early 20th century, and while it was partly drained in 1927 it's not clear whether it ever officially closed - indeed, from the Dilham (Broads) end it is still just about navigable for about a mile. The unusual width suggests it was designed with the local cargo and fishing boats, wide-bodied sailing 'Wherries', in mind. Very few of these are still seaworthy but some can still be found around East Anglia.
Around 1996, engineering and environmental studies agreed that at least 6 miles of the canal could be restored, and in 2008 a trust was formed with the sole intent of reviving the waterway, which would provide these towns with a navigable link to the Norfolk Broads. It's just possible that increased use of boats for leisure could see the canal start paying for itself, 100 years after it's demise. The North Walsham Canal Company is currently owned by Cubitt and Walker who also own the closed Mill here at Ebridge Lock.
As can be seen here, though the lock as already been cleared by volunteers with excavators, it doesn't take long for vegetation to re-establish itself. Restoring the waterway will take much time, patience and effort, and then it must continue to earn its keep if it is to remain a successful restoration project.

Most of the time, me and rain, we don't get along so well. When the time comes for some night photos, though, I love the rain (as long as I have an umbrella). Night shots in the city are all about the lights, and the rain provides all these crazy reflections, amplifying the light. I've also been inspired to try a few shots with some shallower DOF, particularly on nights like tonight, when I'm not carrying a tripod.
Met up with some friends - some old, some new, some local, some from far away -this evening for sangria and some food at Cha Cha Cha, followed by a trip to Aub Zam Zam. After all the drinks had set in, and the rain really started coming down, I had to step out of Zam Zam for a break from the crowd, so naturally when on a photo hunt. I didn't expect this to be my photo for the day at the time, but the more I look at it, the more it grows on me.
I have been eyeing this lock for a few months now and I finally took the time to bring my camera downtown with me to take a picture of it. I had to wait until about noon for the sun to make it to the middle of the sky. The light has just begun to hit the handle of this bar that secures the door which to me looks like a cross. The door and the bolts and iron that hold it together looked rusty but still seems solid and secure. The door and it's details are rough and weathered but right next to it and almost encroaching into the doors "personal space" is this lush plant that has consumed the entire wall. I took the picture from a few different perspectives but decided on one that looked up at the lock. It is like something that we are striving for in life but we are not quite able to grasp or get through yet. In this case maybe it can be viewed as a relationship with God. He is the Light and the way to Eternal Salvation but sometimes we get too busy with our lives to remember this. Anyway, I took this with my 40D with my 28-300L lens @ 28mm f8 shutter speed 1/25. I touched up the picture in PhotoShop by playing with the color and contrast. I didn't really know what I was doing so I fiddled with each until I liked the colors. Anyway, I hope to see some other pictures on here soon.

Here you get a good view of all the debris thats just thrown in front of Enlarged Erie Canal Lock 58 in Newark, NY.Unfortunately a scrap metal company uses this site. A group of volunteers in Newark made an effort to clean the site up this past summer and they did a darn good job but there's nothing they can do if the scrap metal company persists in messing up the site. Why they can't at least store their stuff off to the side is beyond me..... Located off Route 31 on Lyons Street in Newark, NY.

This is a shot of Enlarged Erie Canal Lock 59 in Newark, NY. Back when Newark was called Lockville this lock was referred to as the Upper Lock being that there were three locks, quite close to each other, in the village at that time. In the center you will notice the three openings which are the spillway entrances. These entrances got rid of any excess water and also regulated the water above the lock. To the left is the north chamber which you can walk about halfway down into before you encounter swampy conditions. As you can see, on the far right hand side, the south chamber is partially buried. Lock 59 was built in 1841 as a single chamber lock and became a double chamber lock in 1874 when the second chamber was added. It is located across from Erie Barge Lock 28-B on North Clinton Street in Newark, NY.

The double locks (locks wide enough to take in two boats side-by-side) were added in 1701 when the 3 previous pound gates were removed.

The Exeter Canal was the first pound lock canal in the country. In 1564-6 John Trew of Glamorgan cut a 13/4 mile channel to by-pass shallows on the River Exe which prevented boats from reaching Exeter. The canal was only 16ft wide and 3ft deep. It was often impassable with the result that many merchants preferred to unload their goods at Topsham and bring them to Exeter by road
In 1676 the canal was extended to Topsham and in 1698-1701 it was further straightened and enlarged to 50ft wide and 10ft deep to accommodate ships.
The canal was extended to Turf in 1827, where it could be reached by ships at all states of the tide. The Canal Basin was opened in 1830 as an alternative to the river Quay. The fine Victorian warehouses on The Quay were built in 1835
The city's prosperity from the late Middle Ages to the end of the 18th century was based on the woollen industry and trade with Europe. For several centuries Exeter was one of the largest and richest towns in England. When Daniel Defoe visited the city in 1714 he wrote 'Exeter is large, rich, beautiful, populous, and was once a very strong city'.
During the Napoleonic wars (1793-1815) trade with Europe ceased. By the time peace was restored the centre of the textile manufacturing had shifted to the northern industrial towns and the Devon woollen industry never regained its former importance.

On my top patio, I'm always am scared I'll be locked out. I did this one as another mock-off of RocketEqualsLove. Who did a very similar shot aqnd angle at a old house awhile back.
Today we woke up early, despite Buchser Fest and until 05:00 AM. And Kooki came home from Brussel, and arrived home just after 5:00 AM but the poor fellow was locked out by Annie and could not get into the house until 05:30AM, standing and waiting for the door to be opened.
And this morning, we had a Berghutte Dienst, and was up there at 10:00, but I was tired, Kooki was keeping it up despite his deprived sleep last night. So I decided to leave Annie up there, and walk down to Daellikon ZH. On our way down, we saw this farm, selling their produce, including their fresh milk dispenser, free range chicken eggs and ,,, now is a season for pumpkins.
Lock and Dam 5 on the Upper Mississippi River in Minnesota City, Minn., has been dewatered this winter to allow the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, to complete major maintenance work on it.
