The Guardian reading group decided that "Make Room! Make Room!" was a good choice for trying times so I got hold of a copy to find out why. I note that the current population of the United States is not far different from the book's prediction for the turnn of the millennium.

Marple Locks are currently closed due to water shortage caused by the collapse of Toddbrook dam at Whaley Bridge last year. 😦
Paper, mixed collage, soft pastel, watercolour, and ink
15.5 x 10.5 cm booklet, September 2020
Unable to travel to Italy due to the ongoing pandemic, I created this six-page booklet in memory of long periods spent teaching there. At the front is written: 'In lockdown, tight hands around my lungs', and at the back 'breath returned in colour'. I was interested in exploring the tension between interior and exterior spaces at this time and wanted to hold on to a sense of place through memory and fragments. I questioned the restraining properties of frames and the expansiveness of the works they contain. In pp.1-2 there is a reference to Fra Angelico's Annunciation and a photograph I took in Ischia mixed with hand-marbled the paper I made in Florence. pp.3-4 reference Titian's explosive Assumption in the Frari as well as a Marino Marini sculpture. pp.5-6 considers rupture by referencing Bill Viola's Flood installation, and a Braque seascape.
