Birds.Crowned Lapwing. Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park/ Kalahari Desert. South Africa. Nov/2019

Crowned Lapwing

The crowned lapwing (Vanellus coronatus), or crowned plover, is a bird of the lapwing subfamily that occurs contiguously from the Red Sea coast of Somalia to southern and southwestern Africa. It is an adaptable and numerous species, with bold and noisy habits. It is related to the more localized black-winged and Senegal lapwings, with which it shares some plumage characteristics.

The crowned lapwing is easily recognized by its combination of brown and white colours, with most tellingly, a black crown intersected by an annular white halo. Adults are noisy and conspicuous.

Males measure on average 3% larger than females. Juveniles are dull versions of adults, vermiculated on the wings and mantle, the legs yellowy rather than red and the bill lacking the red base.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is a large wildlife preserve and conservation area in southern Africa. The park straddles the border between South Africa and Botswana and comprises two adjoining national parks:

•Kalahari Gemsbok National Park in South Africa

•Gemsbok National Park in Botswana

The total area of the park is 38,000 square kilometres (15,000 sq mi). Approximately three-quarters of the park lies in Botswana and one-quarter in South Africa. Kgalagadi means "place of thirst." [1] In September 2014, more than half of the Botswana portion of the park was sold for gas-fracking

The park is located largely within the southern Kalahari Desert. The terrain consists of red sand dunes, sparse vegetation, occasional trees, and the dry riverbeds of the Nossob and Auob Rivers. The rivers are said to flow only about once per century. However, water flows underground and provides life for grass and camelthorn trees growing in the river beds. The rivers may flow briefly after large thunderstorms

Parque Transfronteiriço do Kgalagadi

• Parque Nacional Gemsbok no Botsuana

Kalahari Desert

The Kalahari Desert is a large semi-arid sandy savanna in Southern Africa extending for 900,000 square kilometres (350,000 sq mi), covering much of Botswana, parts of Namibia and regions of South Africa.

It is not to be confused with the Angolan, Namibian and South African Namib coastal desert, whose name is of Khoekhoegowab origin and means "vast place"

Kalahari is derived from the Tswana word Kgala, meaning "the great thirst", or Kgalagadi, meaning "a waterless place"; the Kalahari has vast areas covered by red sand without any permanent surface water

Deserto do Kalahari

OK, the image title is a bit dramatic, but do have a look at these two dialog boxes: they appear when you're following an iTunes URL and the track the URL points to is not available from the iTunes Store you have currently selected.

If this happens while the US store is selected, you see a dialog box that offers easy access to the next logical step, namely change to a different (international) store that offers the item in question.

If, however, you're currently using the German store, you're stuck: the error text simply says "The item you've requested is not currently available from the German store." No mention that the item is available on another iTunes Store (it was in this specific case!).

I'm not sure whether this dialog box is built right into iTunes or is triggered from the server-side software powering the iTunes Store. Anyway, it would be nice if you would get the same automated "customer service" regardless of which national iTunes Store you're using.

Guideline: when you localize software, make sure all versions are in-sync feature-wise up to a rather detailed level.

Recently Nintendo released one of my all-time favorite SNES titles, ActRaiser, on Wii’s Virtual Console. While replaying it and reliving childhood memories I noticed that the North American localization is riddled with typos and grammatical mistakes that I was apparently too stupid to notice in 1993. I snapped one that I particularly liked to give me a chance to build Myles’ “grammar police” tag.

Companies can use localization services according to their convenience. They can use these courses at any time of the day according to their needs. This process saves them from the recruitment of a specialized trainer belonging to the native language. Using self-paced localized courses, the learners can be trained during the business days, it eliminates the need to operate during the weekends as well.

Originally there where fourteen antenna's on the platform, but terrian, need for a wide signal and system design caused us to rethink the whole thing and delete eigth antennas. Now the signal is correct and the big platform will have a little extra space. This platform sits on the peaks over looking Aspen Colorado, about 4000 feet below.

Orange localized artificial light on the monument, highlighting the plaque. Horizon light can be seen on the right.

Here's what the sign at the monument says: "Completed in 1882 at a cost of $65,000, this monolithic, 60-foot high granite pyramid was built by the Union Pacific Railroad Company. It stand on the highest elevation (8,247 feet) of the original transcontinental route. Until 1901, when the railroad was relocated several miles to the South, it passed close by the North side of the monument where once stood the railtown of Sherman.

"The monument serves as a memorial to the Ames brothers of Massachusetts, Oakes (1804-1873) And Oliver (1807-1877), whose welath, influence, talent, were key factors in the construction of the first coast-to-coast railroad in North America. The contribution made by Oakes was especially significant, even though in 1873 he was implicated in a scandal relative to financing the construction of the railroad.

"Ames monument was designed by the distinguished American architect Henry Hobson Richardson (1838-1886). Located further West than any of his works, this memorial typifies the Richardsonian style by its energtic, elemental characteristics. His love for native construction materials is demonstrated by the monument's great, rough-hewn granite blocks, quarried from 'Reed's Rock,' one half-mile West. A Richardson biographer has called the monument 'perhaps the finest memorial in America... one of Richardson's best-known and most perfect works.' The bas-relief medallions of the Ames brothers were done by the prominent American sculptor, Augustus Saint-Gaudens."

The sign conveniently glosses over the scandal that plagued the Ames brothers, and does not mention the fact that, once the railroad was moved, the monument has been all but forgotten. It was donated to The State of Wyoming by Union Pacific in 1983. It's a short two-mile drive from Interstate 80, but is not widely known or visited.
