This highly localized endemic is only found in a few mountain ranges in southeastern Andalusia, with the greatest populations dwelling in Sierra de Cazorla. Here, they are tied to humid, shaded habitat with large rocks or rock faces.

"Marker 11 - Room 90: THe previous interpretation at Marker 11 provided that the pueblo was two stories high along the back row of rooms. The upper story was used either for milling or corn storage. During the Secondary Occupation, there appears to have been a localized fire and the roof was not repoaired. Interpretative scenarios however do change. While evaluationg the first photographic documentation of the site a discrepancy was found between what was seen in the photograph and the earlier hypothetical reconstruction presented to the public: remnants of a third story were visible. Although none of the third story section remains today, the photo and existing architecture were compared to find that there was indeed a third story to the Pueblo. It is unknown if this third story ever completely spanned the back wall of the structure (the northermost row of rooms). In any case, after a fire burned the roof of Room 90, the room was turned into both a trash repository and a burial site." ~ museum display/exhibit, Salmon Ruins, Bloomfield, New Mexico. Dusky-headed Brushfinch, a localized Colombian endemic found exclusively in the upper reaches of the Rio Magdalena drainage. This bird was one of several seen and heard on 26 June 2010 at the Parque Arqueologico de San Agustin in Huila, Colombia.

Este pájaro es un endémico del Colombia sur en el departamento del Huila, cerca del inicio del Río Magdalena. Nos vimos muchos en el Parque Arqueológico de San Agustín.

This part of the island is comparatively arid (and the “repaving” it gets every few decades can’t help much), but the moisture from these vents creates its own mini ecosystem. Compare this to the dry grass in the previous shot

Okay, this is very localized. You can think about why does this shopkeeper in Hong Kong post such a message out.... because this glass wall is indeed the outside side of the shop. Got it?

Localized and sporadic at this sandy site and co-occurring with a close legume relative (in tribe Amorpheae), Parryella filifolia (common dunebroom), a shrub and subshrub that is much more abundant. Annual bromegrasses were essentially absent from this area.

last week, just before leaving for manhattan, there was a very localized storm system over venice. when i say over venice, i mean, literally over venice and only venice (parts of santa monica too)... the clouds were soot-bellied, to be modest, and everywhere else, the skies were blue.

this is a framegrab from a film taken from my rooftop - the film is very long (5 minutes, 48 mb) and barely edited but it does depict the unusually localized quality of this mini storm system. i've never seen anything like it.

so, if you are into weather, then this film is for you. otherwise, look away, there's nothing to see here.

i felt like i was walking with a cloud over my head, having my own donnie darko moment.

the film is available right here on vimeo.

Vegetative variability across the landscape is linked with localized differences in micro-topography. The steepness of a slope as well as the direction it faces, referred to as its aspect, are key in determining how much sunlight is received, and in turn how quickly the soil warms up and the amount of moisture it retains. Therefore, two sides of a hill that are underlain by the same rocks and soil may develop totally different associations of plants. Take Bear Hill in Putney, for instance. The hill’s south-facing slopes tend to be warmer and drier and support associations of oaks, beech, and hickories with an understory of shrubs and flowers, while the heavily shadowed north-facing slopes remain cool and damp, providing good habitat for hemlocks and yellow birch, and an understory largely devoid of shrubs and wildflowers.
