"Most young people find botany a dull study. So it is, as taught from the text-books in the schools; but study it yourself in the fields and woods, and you will find it a source of perennial delight."

Coeloglossum viride (Orchidaceae) 162 22
Coeloglossum viride is a widespread but highly localized orchid with a circumferential distribution throughout most of Europe. Its choice of habitat is extremely varied and the species can be found in dry or wet conditions, in full sun or shade and on alkaline or acid substrates. Although it may occur at high altitudes throughout its distribution, in the south of it is range it is virtually confined to mountain grasslands and light woodland. Coeloglossum viride can tolerate altitudes up to nearly 3000 meters and is perfectly at home growing alongside more specialized Alpine orchids such as the Vanilla Orchids.

Living in the northern hemisphere, I've always wondered why the extra day of leap year is tacked onto the end of February. Would much rather it occur in summer. Having a July 32 wouldn't bother me a bit. But it is what it is. This leap year found me out with the camera exploring the aftermath of a late winter storm. The light and sky were magnificent and that's what brought me out. It's often that way; I see a sky like this and out I go with no particular destination or photo concept in mind. I just let the universe guide me and improvise from there. This day the universe vectored me to this 'blow zone' as I refer to them. Sometimes the wind, temperature and snow conditions combine to create corridors of moving snow. This isn't snow falling from the sky, rather wind channeling already fallen snow into specific pathways. They are most often observed streaming across roads that are perpendicular to the prevailing wind and adjacent to large expanses of open ground. Dormant farmland is an absolutely perfect setup. As a motorist, these things are a hassle at best and can be downright dangerous. Visibility decreases to zero once you enter the zone, and a dry road can turn into inches deep snow cover in a matter of feet. Entering a zone like this at high speed can have tragic consequences. Despite the danger, I've always been. attracted to the haunting visual quality. It's really surreal to see such a visible depiction of wind flow. It's unusual to see a such a localized weather phenomenon with defined edges that you can literally walk up to. I love photographing and experiencing boundary lines and even better when nature creates them for me. Getting this close outside of the warmth and protection of my car was jarring. The snow stream looks amorphous and therefore harmless. But in reality it flows like a torrent; the cold is penetrating, and the snow forms into a fine diamond dust spray that is disorienting, blinding and shockingly cold on exposed skin. The sound is deafening and I found it difficult to stand still and hold the camera steady. Photographically there was just no way to work inside the stream, and the photos showed little more than a white blur. I found the best approach was to stand off a bit and try to contrast the blur of the stream against the adjacent landscape. As I walked out of the stream, a big gust kicked up; I turned back and captured this scene. My 2020 leap day was complete.
Serapias orientalis (Orchidaceae) 117 23
Serapias orientalis is a member of the Serapias vomeracea group of Serapias. Its name is a reference to its easterly distribution in the Mediterranean.
It is a localized species but can be abundant in its favored locations, this generally being a position in full sun on damp (even wet) alkaline soils.

"The Silver Sliver Galaxy, officially known as NGC 4236, is a barred spiral galaxy located in the constellation Draco. It is a member of the M81 Group, a nearby galaxy group that includes well-known galaxies such as M81 and M82. Despite its proximity, NGC 4236 is often overlooked due to its low surface brightness and large angular size.
General Characteristics
Galaxy Type: Barred Spiral (SBdm)
Distance: Approximately 11 to 14 million light-years
Location: Constellation Draco
Apparent Magnitude: ~10.5
Size: ~25 arcminutes long (~100,000 light-years across)
Group: Member of the M81 Group
Key Features
Barred Spiral Structure
NGC 4236 displays a loosely wound spiral structure with a faint but extended central bar.
Its spiral arms are diffuse and lack the strong contrast seen in more active galaxies.
Due to its orientation, the galaxy appears as a thin, elongated sliver — giving rise to the nickname “Silver Sliver Galaxy.”
Star Formation Activity
Although overall low in surface brightness, the galaxy contains several H II regions, indicating localized pockets of star formation.
These regions are visible in hydrogen-alpha wavelengths and contribute to the galaxy’s subtle structure.
Low Surface Brightness
One of the defining traits of NGC 4236 is its very low surface brightness, which makes it challenging to detect visually or photograph under light-polluted skies.
This characteristic makes it a popular target for deep-sky astrophotography and studies of galaxy formation in less evolved systems.
Membership in the M81 Group
NGC 4236 resides on the outskirts of the M81 Group, a nearby cluster of galaxies in the northern sky.
Its relatively isolated position within the group may contribute to its low rate of interaction and slow evolutionary development compared to more centrally located members."

The lovebug is a species of march fly found in parts of Central America and the southeastern United States, especially along the Gulf Coast. Localized lovebug flights can number in the millions. Male/female pairs (joined tail-to-tail) will hover in the air, drifting slowly. Two major flights occur each year; the spring flight occurs during late April and May, and the summer flight occurs during late August and September. Flights extend over periods of four to five weeks. Mating takes place almost immediately after emergence of the females. Adult females live only three to four days, while males live a little longer. They have to stick to each other at all times.

Very localized and poorly-known seedeater. Mostly known from northeastern Argentina and southern Paraguay, but also a disjunct cluster of records in Bolivia and Brazil. Might undergo seasonal movements. Males have blackish or dark brown throat and cheek (sometimes extending onto nape and upper breast), gray crown, and unmarked tan underparts. Females are pale sandy-brown overall; note dark bill. Look for pairs or small flocks in open grassy habitats, often mixed with other seedeaters.
ENDANGERED. Capuchino seedeaters are highly susceptible to anthropogenic disturbance of their grassland habitat, which is rapidly being converted for agricultural use, the intensification of livestock practices and afforestation. This species is categorized as globally Endangered on the basis of its very small population size, the potential for habitat loss and degradation, and the potential for capture for the pet trade.

Steam fog, also called evaporation fog, is the most localized form and is created by cold air passing over much warmer water or moist land. It often causes freezing fog, or sometimes hoar frost.
