My local guide, Sauveur, walking me past terraces, pastures and garden plots on a foggy day. Looking south. Sauveur referred to a loose collection of settlements in the area as "Bélo" (sp?). He said their were around 250 people living in Bélo and that each family had, on average, 6-7 people. Their are roughly 3 harvests a year, of about 3 months each. According to Sauveur, a farmer will sell ~60% of their harvest to market. After triangulating various calculations I get the impression that most families here survive on 50-100 USD per month.

On our first day in Cerocahui, our local guide (really just a local man making some extra money) took us on a horseback ride. My wife is posing with the guide and my horse's ears are visable in the lower center. On this ride our guide took us past his house and up a valley, but saw that the stream (and therefor the waterfall up higher) were not running. So he took us down another canyon that lead to a dirt road in a forest mixed with pine and tropical trees. The route took us past an emergancy landing strip and through some old narrow lanes in the town of Cerocahui. The views out side and in town were excelent. I would like to go back and spend a couple of days looking around and taking pictures in Cerocahui.

Our visit to Sapporo was much enhanced in every way by the accompaniment of a local guide who facilitated finding our way from hither to thither, and advising on the more attractive local sights. He particularly recommended the observation decks of the city hall, and as with everything else, he was abundantly correct. These decks extended the full length of both the south and north side of the building, were free to enter, and -- this is not a lie -- were completely empty of anyone other than ourselves. Despite offering fantastic panoramic views of the city in every direction. As such, there was a surfeit of luxuries in terms of glorious views, but the most striking had to be what looked like a miniature (OK, not so mini) version of the Eiffel Tower just a few blocks away, which we were informed was actually a (massively over-engineered) Panasonic television broadcast tower.

Also, the vistas made clear Sapporo is an enormous city, sporting two million people spread over a thousand square kilometers. It's the fifth largest city in Japan, after Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, and Nagoya, and dwarfs the rest of Hokkaido, of which it is the capital.

It was 12:30 pm when we met Nahim , our local guide, at the village of Wadi Ram (???? ???), a valley cut into the sandstone and granite rock in southwest Jordan. The wadi has been inhabited by many human cultures since prehistoric times including the Nabateans - leaving their mark in all kind of forms, nowdays the valley is populated by Bedouin tribes. Wadi Rum may be best known for its connection with British officer T. E. Lawrence, who based his operations here during the Arab Revolt of 1917–18. by fall Nahim set the Jeep in the direction of the camp whose located on a small hill observing a large territory of the Wadi. Tiger was one of the best of our local guides. (Like most of our guides, he identified himself only by his English name. In his case, it was also a springboard for a bunch of Tiger Woods jokes.) His information seemed reliable when it overlapped with mine (albeit fully in line with the most optimistic assessment of the dam), and his patter was both fluent and funny. (I don't know if he wrote his own material, but even if not his comic timing was impeccable.)

When driving back from the dam, we passed a grove of trees (which I couldn't get a non-blurry picture of) planted in honor of the return of Hong Kong to China. There were 1997 trees, for the year in which it happened. Tiger then speculated on how many trees there would be for Taiwan's reunification with the mainland-- and rather worried me by hopefully suggesting that it might be fewer than 2008, in time for the Beijing Olympics. (One may hope that cooler heads ultimately prevail in Beijing itself.)
