Horse-riding has been an integral part of Hacienda Zuleta for over a century. The ranch is home to 200 horses, 100 bred for polo and the rest for guests and farm-use.
The Zuletenos breed, a cross between Andalusian, Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse bred at Hacienda Zuleta, is also a wonderful dressage horse.
The horses are so well-mannered, obedient and eager-to-please, very responsive to the rider. Just a dream.
"Almost nothing can spook them," said José Ñoquez, local guide and master horseman, "They have a perfect disposition for trail-riding."
Riders can explore the stunning Andean countryside on a number of trails that climb to nearly 4000m above sea level.
Our local guide told us we had to be ready to shoot by 10.30am and the light would be done by 11am. He was right - almost to the minute!
Isalo National Park is located in the Southwestern Madagascar and called the "Malagasy Colorado", this great mass of eroded sandstone - 180 km long and 25 km wide - is a western decor with the stone color of gold, green or tan depending on the light.
The park is known for its wide variety of terrain, including sandstone formations, deep canyons, palm-lined oases, and grassland.
A local guide is required for visitors entering the park and treks can last from several hours to a week or longer.

A couple of ceramic Bulls stand on the middle of most rooftops in Cuzco where they stand as if on a hilltop looking out on the rolling, downward-sloping pastures of orange tiles. This powerful image is one of good fortune and protection for the house and the families that inhabit it.
People place two bulls in the middle of the highest part of the house. They face in the same direction as the houses and in between them rises a cross, both a Christian symbol and something related to Illapa, the thunder god, flags, and metal roosters. Generally they are placed when the houses are finished but before the people begin living in them.
This image was photographed in Southern Peru led by Neotropic Photo Tours and our Peruvian local guide for this portion of the trip; Fisher Chávez of Perú Nature Photography.

Site description The site is a National Park covering 36,000 ha of the High Atlas, including the highest mountain in Morocco, Jbel Toubkal (4,167 m). Located only 60 km south of the town of Marrakech, the dramatic mountain scenery attracts thousands of visitors each year, many of whom climb Jbel Toubkal or trek elsewhere in the park. The mountain summits are often only slightly above the level of their surrounding high plateaus, which are separated by deep valleys. The park extends from 1,000 m upwards and therefore encompasses a range of vegetation-types, from forest to alpine meadow. Forest only covers 15% of the park, and consists mainly of the oldest Quercus rotundifolia stands in the High Atlas and Juniperus thurifera. Along the valleys, irrigated agriculture is practised and most of the park is used for extensive livestock-grazing.
More than 95 breeding species have been recorded, among them nine species of the Mediterranean North Africa biome. Thirteen raptors are recorded, among them Gypaetus barbatus, which definitely bred in the park until 1980. The Parc National de Toubkal is one of only two areas in Morocco where Apus caffer has been recorded breeding, and also holds several species with quite localized distributions in Africa, such as Rhodopechys sanguinea and Eremophila alpestris.
Conservation issues The National Park was created by 'Arrête viziriel' on 19 January 1942. Despite its protected status, the park has been facing growing pressures since the 1960s. Poaching has wiped out some species and overgrazing has destroyed or degraded much of the natural vegetation. Tourism has mushroomed and led to erosion of footpaths—on some days 30-40 tourists may be found together at one time on the summit of Jbel Toubkal, in spite of the long and arduous trek required to reach it. To counter these threats and safeguard wildlife, in the 1950s AEFCS created a reserve for Ammotragus lervia adjacent to the park, and in 1994 enclosed an area of 1,000 ha for the reintroduction of Gazella cuvieri. Both these measures have resulted in the protection of areas of forest habitat which are important for breeding birds. In 1994, a management plan for the park was drawn up under the auspices of AEFCS. Further conservation measures required include the training of local guides; the protection of nest-sites of the rarer bird species, particularly raptors; maintenance of trails to prevent erosion; and the establishment of grazing enclosures to protect endemic plant species.
Taquile (Spanish: Isla de Taquile; Quechua: Intika) is an island on the Peruvian side of Lake Titicaca 45 km offshore from the city of Puno.
The inhabitants, known as Taquileños, speak Puno Quechua.
Taquileños are known for their fine handwoven textiles and clothing, which are regarded as among the highest-quality handicrafts in Peru. Knitting is exclusively performed by males, beginning in early boyhood. Women spin wool and use vegetables and minerals to dye the wool to be used by the community. Women are also the weavers of the Chumpis, the wide belts with woven designs worn by everyone in the community of Taquile.
Taquileans are known for having created an innovative, community-controlled sustainable tourism model, offering home stays, transportation, lodging for groups, cultural activities, local guides and restaurants.
Berenty, Madagascar
Looking through my Lemur images from this trip I came across this picture from our first full day at Berenty. This is yet another bird that has had a name change and the name given here is its original, as given us by our local guide. Apparently it is now known by the less imaginative name of the Madagascar Scops Owl or even the Malagasy Scops Owl. They are endemic in the South and East of the island.
Thanks to all who take the time to comment or mark as a favourite.

Teardrop Arch in Monument Valley. Funny story showing how blind I can be. My guide in Monument Valley was Quanah Parker, and he suggested going to Teardrop Arch. I had 'never' seen or heard of it, but his suggestions were always good, so I agreed, and we had a fabulous night shooting this Arch, and some adjacent sites. I got back to the motel in the early morning, and there was a 36 inch, 1 meter photo of this same arch over the bed. I had been looking at it the better part of a week and had no clue what I was looking at. Wonder what I'm missing out in the open, lol. Shot at 14 mm, f 2.8, 25 sec., ISO 8000. Lighting with Low Level Lighting, www.lowlevellighting.org
You need a local guide to take might tours in MV. If you want an excellent guide for night photography in Monument Valley, google Majestic Monument Valley Tours, contact them, and schedule a night tour with Quanah Parker.

Our local guide, booked for an early morning walk, happened to mention she had a Hoopoe nesting in her garden, by the afternoon we were sitting in her garden photographing it.
This is a little marshy area at the beginning of our hike with a local guide and we must have brought luck because we watched an eagle take off from this exact spot. It's one of the only times he'd ever seen one and none so close. Alas, no pics since it was a surprise, but it was a great moment on what would turn out to be another great day in Norway.

I have to confess that the conversion to sRGB for this photograph has really bounced the colours around. It's perhaps a tad redder than the original, but as website and emails are viewed on such a variety of monitors, there's no telling exactly what colours you're seeing. I hope they are okay!
Tony Hewitt and I are just back from the Marlborough region of New Zealand - up the top of the south island. We were over there for the PSNZ National Convention, we had an exhibition of our ND5 work at Blenheim's Millenium Gallery (thanks to the introduction from Simon Woolf and the hard work by PSNZ President Murray Cave), plus we took a group of intrepid photographers on a Photographic Counsel.
This is when the photo above was taken. Will and Rose Parsons from Driftwood Tours handled all the logistics for Tony and me, leaving us and our six guests to concentrate on photography for six glorious days. The weather gods smiled on us because despite a risky forecast, we managed to get some incredible light and the time of the year was just perfect for the autumn colours in the vineyards.
Due to a lot of rain and milder temperatures the previous month, locals were saying there wasn't as much colour as there can be, but we found it pretty damn colourful! The challenge is finding a viewpoint with some altitude because the majority of the vineyards are on flat ground and so photographing them from the roadside is very limiting. There are two solutions: take a tall ladder or a cherrypicker, or search for vineyards with rolling hills or lookouts nearby.
This is where our local guide Will was such a benefit. Not only did he look after our food and accommodation needs fantastically well, he also knew where to go. And being a photographer himself, he had a good idea of exactly what Tony and I wanted, even if he didn't quite understand our accents (just kidding).
One of the challenges with this image was getting the colour balance pleasing. With so much colour in the scene, I found Capture One and Photoshop struggled to give me a pleasing result with their various tools, so I reverted to a Colour Balance adjustment layer. By removing greens from the shadows and midtones and adding in a little yellow in the highlights, I felt I had a colour palette close to what I remembered. It was a magical evening shared with a group of good friends.

The "King of Borneo" this orchid has been considered one of the most beautiful orchids in the world. Originally discovered by western science (orchid hunters) in 1887, Paphiopedilum rothschildianum is obligate to ultramafic soils.
Though somewhat widespread within its range, this orchid is still illegally collected from the wild for the worldwide orchid trade and at some locations the population is in decline. There are rarely pressures of development or land conversion affecting this orchid as it typically occurs in some of the most inaccessible areas to humans and other wildlife.
This plant is one of the most majestic orchids to see blooming in habitat. Several photos in this group demonstrate plants left behind by orchid collectors in the native habitat.
Fortunately this orchid occurs in multiple protected habitats. The plants depicted here are not on federally protected land, but local communities closely watch this habitat and require petition, registration, and local guides to visit. Fortunately the village elders have assumed responsibility to control access to these valuable natural resources.
This small piece of dried leaf brings back so many memories. It was made by a local guide when we explored the Indian River, on the beautiful island of Dominica (many years ago). It was lovely when fresh and green, and it is equally lovely now dried.
I photographed this rather strange looking bird while driving along a sandy track leading down to The Chobe River, Botswana. A local guide informed me that their popular name derives from their call, which is said to warn all animals of the presence of predators, including people. From January 19 to February 6, 2018 my wife Jodie and I visited north western India with Birdtour Asia. Special thanks to tour leader Rob Hutchinson and local guide Gajendra Singh for making the trip a great success.
The expedition began with an early morning visit to the foggy Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary on the outskirts of New Delhi. From there we travelled by train to Ranthambhore National Park for a Tiger search, continued on to Tal Chhapar Sanctuary for Black Buck, visited the Jorbeer Vulture Reserve near Bikaner, checked out Khichan for the Demoiselle Crane spectacle, found an Indian Bustard in Desert National Park, picked up a few special species in Siyana, encountered an Avadavat at Mount Abu, birded the Little Rann of Kutch, saw Lion and Leopard in Gir National Park, and finished up at Bhuj with Hypocolius, White-naped Tit and Crab Plover.
Great company, wonderful food, incredible wildlife (including six species of cat), and the friendly people and places of India made for a memorable journey.
