Keighley - Mechanics Institute, Temperance Hall and Free Library. Postcard circa 1905, postmarked 24th December 1906 and carrying a green half-pence stamp featuring the head of King Edward VII. The original painting was by Edwin Riby.

Edwin Riby (1866 – 1927) was born in Scarborough, but moved to Keighley in 1888. In 1893 he set up his own business in the town, moving premises in 1896 to Lawkholme Crescent. The shop housed an art gallery and sold artists’ materials, and was where Riby cleaned and restored old paintings. Riby himself painted portraits, landscapes, and country genre scenes. He painted a series of pictures of Keighley, which were sold as prints and postcards. Bradford Museums and Galleries have several examples of his work on display at Cliffe Castle. In his latter years he toured Canada, painting landscape views that sold well there. He also taught art and was an Art Master at both the Glusburn and Oakworth Municipal Institutions, and at local Catholic day and evening art classes for adults. His only son, Claude, was killed on Christmas Eve, 1915, on the Western Front during the Great War, and Edwin himself died, aged 61, from head injuries when he fell down the steps from the upper deck of a bus.

Front and back of postcard from the personal collection of Keighley and District Local History Society member Tim Neal. Scanned by Tim Neal in 2020. Additional information from Colin Neville at the Not Just Hockney website (www.notjusthockney.info/riby-edwin/)

Bristlecone Pine jewelry boxes

These rustic-appearing beautiful jewelry boxes (or desk organizers!) are made from Bristle Cone Pine that was burned over by a forest fire in the 1880's. Bristle Cone Pine grows high in the Rocky Mountains at 8000 feet and over, and is the oldest living thing in the world. These boxes are made from trees that are 200 to 1000 years old.

The boxes are hand made in the San Luis Valley of Southern Colorado, US, and finished with a fine Danish oil.

This fella was at the Art Show at Henderson State Park in Destin, Florida. I enjoyed looking at the little boys face in a amazement more then the 9 foot tall guy.

The area around Charleston Blvd. at Main St./First St./Commerce. The homes were ugly derelict shells and the artists decorated them. Added color to a blighted neighbourhood. Las Vegas, Nevada.
