This weekend's activities revolved around the Sudarshana Chakra, Lord Narayanaya's famed spiritual weapon. Known for its protection of the surrendered devotees and its destruction of all negative forces, it was a timely focus for these days of Covid-19 and the fear that seems so prevalent in the world today.
Saturday started with Guru puja, followed by Kalash puja, and then the Sudarshana Yajna began. For this event, not only the main yajna kund was used, but eight individual kunds were placed around the Sudarshana murti located in front of the main temple. Simultaneously, 50 individually-sponsored yajnas were performed on the back lawn by Residents of The Ashram. After the yajnas, Gurudev also performed an abhishekam ceremony on the large murti.
The entire event was livestreamed and commented on by Rishis and Swamis who gave insights into the significance of the Sudarshana Chakra and told personal stories. On Sunday morning, Gurudev joined the prayers to sing a variety of beautiful bhajans, too.

In response to the global crisis in education, thousands of education actors from around the world came together for the Transforming Education Summit during the U.N. General Assembly this past September to discuss systemic issues of equity, inclusion, quality, and relevance. From climate emergencies to the rise of fake news to public health crises, education systems must not only equip the next generation with the skills needed to read, write, and count, but to actively problem-solve and think creatively in today’s rapidly changing world. To help reach Sustainable Development Goal 4, it is essential to transform education systems to meet the needs of today’s learners and deliver a breadth of skills equitably to all children.
The Center for Universal Education (CUE) at Brookings hosted a symposium on education systems transformation on Friday, February 17 at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. As a celebration of its 20th anniversary, the center launched its new 10-year strategy focusing on systems transformation for holistic education, locally defined priorities, and collaboration in bringing research to practice across education ecosystems. The event explored some of the false dichotomies that often characterize education systems transformation—foundational versus holistic learning, local versus global focus, and policy versus practice—and examined the critical role of systems transformation across CUE’s and partners’ diverse work portfolios.
The opening and closing sessions were livestreamed for remote audiences.

It was with a mix of careful preparation and joyful anticipation that Christ Church Cathedral opened its doors to welcome its first congregation for the Cathedral Eucharist in 16 weeks on Sunday morning (July 5). The service has been livestreamed every Sunday during the past four months but the only people in the cathedral were the Archbishop, the Dean, the Dean’s Vicar and sometimes a preacher. The congregation joined online.
Worshippers were greeted at the door by a verger with a warm smile to welcome them back. Inside, the chairs were placed apart from each other to ensure social distancing. There were hand sanitising units and many people were wearing masks.
There was no congregational singing. However, members of the choir were transplanted from their usual stalls and sang from the south transept where they were far from the congregation and able to sing at a safe distance from each other. Their voices provided a soothing balm for members of the cathedral community who are getting used to the new normal.
Archbishop Michael Jackson presided and preached. The service was led by the Dean’s Vicar, the Revd Abigail Sines, and the Dean, the Very Revd Dermot Dunne, was also present.
In his sermon, the Archbishop paid tribute to the clergy of the cathedral for continuing services during lockdown and the clergy and staff who had prepared so diligently to reopen the cathedral for public worship. He thanked the congregation for coming and hoped they found it a safe place to worship. He also thanked “all who have worshipped with the cathedral from afar by electronic means, unseen by us and known to God”.
Turning to the Gospel reading [Matthew 11: 16-19, 25-30] in which Jesus speaks to the crowds rather than to the Scribes and Pharisees, the Archbishop said that it gave a sense of the incarnation and showed Jesus’s engagement with people.
The reading also shows Jesus’ response to human burden, he said: ‘Come to me , all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me,’ Jesus told the crowd. His response combined compassion and empowerment, the Archbishop said, and recognised the spiritual heart of the people who were taken for granted at every level. “Many have become heavy laden to the point of near impossibility to endure in these months past – slowly, cumulatively – and they have continued to give graciously. They are people who have carried, and still carry, our needs as their burden,” he added.
Today as churches reopened for public worship, the Archbishop said it was for us to make use of them and make a go of them, to invite those who have never been here to come here and to encourage those who have been here all their lives to come back.
“COVID 19 has not gone away – we are now in the most open-ended phase of the Relaxation of Restrictions that we have seen yet. There is no doubt that dangers and difficulties remain; common sense, spiritual wisdom and personal responsibility will take us forward in this more difficult Phase of renewed, if slow, engagement with other human beings. While we need to remain careful, we need to make a go of this new freedom too, we need to take adventure forward; and we need to remember those who, almost overnight, became our neighbours in the time of The Lockdown,” he stated.
He continued: “The future lies before us and it will look different; we do not need to rush it but we do need to plan and we do need to engage. We have so much for which to be thankful. We have so many new opportunities. We have responded in this cathedral church to the needs for personal safety and social distancing. We can never forget those who in The Front Line, whatever constituted that ever-expanding Front Line at any given time; we can never forget those who died painfully and horribly from COVID 19; we can never forget those who mourn them and those who mourn others, one by one, who have died in these slow months. The Old Testament prophecy for today speaks of prisoners of hope … Zechariah 9.12: ‘Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope; today I declare that I will restore to you double.’”
The service concluded with prayers which included prayers for members of the cathedral community and for Dr Emer Feely, wife of Dr Tony Holohan, as well as for all who had lost loved ones during the pandemic.

December 19, 2014 – Mixed pod of Bottlenose Dolphins and Pilot Whales - at Taiji Japan
Early this morning at approximately 8:00am Cove Guardians could see 12 vessels heading together on the horizon. The killing fleet had spotted a pod of dolphins and wasted no time in pushing them towards Taiji - and the cove. The pod put up a tough fight and tried everything they could to escape the killers, however all their attempts at freedom were in vain as they were eventually netted off into the cove.
Today was a very profitable day for Taiji as the killers drove in both Bottlenose dolphins and Pilot Whales. We are estimating that approximately 40-45 Pilot Whales were driven in today, alongside at least 8 Bottlenose dolphins - one being a very young calf just a few months old. This young calf was seen clinging to its mothers side as they were spy hopping, confused and terrified after the exhausting drive.
The killers showed their lack of compassion as they decided to leave the pod over night, where they will be swimming in circles until their fate is decided. The weather for tomorrow is supposed to be rainy, so time will show if the pod will have to spend two nights in agony in the cove, before coming face to face with the dolphin killers.
Cove Guardians have been monitoring the pod through the day, and haunting cries can be heard over the cove as darkness descends.. Cove Guardians will be livestreaming tomorrow at approximately 6:30am, but we will update our social media with any potential changes.

The Coronavirus pandemic ushered in a time of isolation and quarantine, but it allowed the unique opportunity for the Canons Regular to take advantage of livestream technology to broadcast our Divine Services heretofore unknown to many people around the world.
Undeterred by quarantine restrictions, a number of Canons made creative use of the latest camera technology and video-editing software to show forth the Sacred Liturgy online. In this manner, many Catholics, Christians, and even the religiously unaffiliated were able to partake in watching the livestreaming in various locations around the globe. The result has been nothing short of remarkable.
In this photo album, viewers will be able to get a behind the scenes glimpse at all the careful effort that is undertaken to broadcast the Sacred Liturgy to the world.
