Participians at the Session: Leading with Empathy in Times of Crisis For leaders, the COVID crisis has posed an unprecedented challenge in guiding people through uncertainty, but it has also provided a opportunity to nourish new visions, build trust, recalibrate operating models and rethink the role of organisations and leadership in the longer term. How can leaders turn empathy into action and lead in a new, more positive and impactful way? This is a livestreamed session. A new columbarium wall in the graveyard of St Matthew’s Church in Irishtown was dedicated by Archbishop Michael Jackson on Sunday February 28. The columbarium will offer a place of repose for parishioners and for people from the wider community.

The dedication took place during a Service of Holy Communion which was livestreamed to parishioners who could not attend due to current restrictions. The Archbishop said that the dedication within the celebration of the Eucharist was “a sign and a symbol to us all of the communion of saints and of the spiritual and loving connection of the living and the dead as we journey through Lent 2021 and beyond”. During the service, the Vicar, the Revd John Marchant, commended parishioner and architect, the late Stuart Hamilton, whose vision led to the building of the columbarium.

The word columbarium derived from the nesting boxes of pigeons or doves, Archbishop Jackson noted. “The dove, the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus in the desert at his baptism and this cannot but be another resonance of the columbarium in a Christian context. It is a gentle and a delightful image of what we do with the ashes of those whom we love now parted from us. We treat them with respect and affection. We share their memory with church and with community. Their ashes rest and nest, so to speak, in the columbarium. And for me in a very particular way these niches, these holes in the stone, connect me with that transformative and spiritual experience on The Mountain of Temptation and its perspective on an even more untouchable life with God on the next–door mountain,” he said.

Archbishop Jackson also paid tribute to the Revd John Marchant who retires at the end of March, for all the wonderful positive and active things he has done in the parish in his years of service there. He described him as “tireless, responsive, industrious, helpful, courteous, outreaching and Godly” and wished him and his wife Pat everything that is best as they journey into the years ahead. He added that they would both be missed and cherished greatly.

He also acknowledged that there were many who would have wished to be in St Matthew’s in person for the dedication. However, he added: “We all continue to seek for God and be found for God in Level 5 Lockdown wherever we are. It adds a certain frisson, a particular sharpness to Lent 2021. We carry in our own person the burden of responsibility for others as the first receivers of the burden of responsibility for ourselves. We have been here before. It gets no easier. Yet we are still all in this together and that too is part of our new understanding of gathering.”

It’s a big year for the City of Galway – as the European Capital of Culture coinciding with this is our medieval treasure – St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church sitting in the very heart of the city which celebrates its 700th Anniversary.

St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church in the heart of Galway marks its 700th anniversary year in 2020. It is the church at the heart of the city with the city and the people at its heart. There are many tales that the church could tell through those years and the anniversary will celebrate the presence of the church in the city. For 700 years people have come and gone through the church as tourists, as worshippers; it has offered solace, sanctuary and refuge. St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church is an Anglican church, currently the rector is the Very Rev Lynda Peilow, the first woman appointed to the role.

St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church is the largest medieval parish church in Ireland in continuous use as a place of worship. It is dedicated to St Nicholas of Myra, patron saint of children (perhaps better known as Santa Claus!), and of mariners. There is some disagreement about when it was built, but it was certainly finished by 1320 – and so we celebrate our momentous birthday in 2020. When the church was built Galway was a tiny, very new town, a sort of frontier settlement in the wild west of Ireland. The inhabitants, however, thought a lot of themselves and much as the current inhabitants had big ambitions – they built a huge church, bigger than many Irish cathedrals. Amongst the visitors to St Nicholas’ over the centuries the most famous is probably Christopher Columbus, who likely prayed here during a visit to Galway in 1477. Less welcome were the Cromwellian troops who used the church as a stable for their horses after the siege of Galway in 1652.

The rector said: ‘We are proud of the history of the church and have planned a list of events throughout 2020 to mark the celebrations. I am privileged to be the rector of St Nicholas’, which has such a rich cultural heritage, but also a warmth and welcome to all. We also have a strong choral tradition which enhances and enlivens all that we are and seek to do.’ She continued that ‘while we are a working church, with service every Sunday and through the week, we also welcome tourists and many cultural events to the building. While we ourselves are keen to celebrate, it is clear the city celebrates with us and the support has been overwhelming.’

The celebrations got off to a joyful start with the newly formed Campanology School ringing out the bells at midnight on New Year's Eve, livestreaming the event on Facebook in the process. This has reached far and wide with over 61,000 views to date. The ships anchored in the harbour sounded their foghorns in response, acknowledging the role that St Nicholas’ has played to our seafarers over the centuries.

The year promises to be filled with many exciting events – both spiritual and cultural. The Galway churches will come together on St Brigid’s Day for pilgrimage via Turas Naofa; Earth Day will be marked in April, with a target of 700 trees to be planted in St Nicholas’ name. ‘Paper Boat’ – an Opera being hosted by the parish In June and produced by its Choral Director, Mark Duley alongside Music for Galway and the Irish National Opera will be community based and will weave together stories connected to St Nicholas. A photographic exhibition curated with the assistance of Galway Museum will take place in July, entitled – “Galway, the City and Beyond”. The Abendmusik concert series will be spread throughout the year, comprising six Sunday afternoon Concerts, with performers such as the Irish Baroque Orchestra, Resurgam, Chamber Choir Ireland, Finghin Collins, English Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble and German Baritone Jachen Kupfer to name but a few.

The Galway Market Holders will host an exhibition in late summer and in September, a historical symposium built from a partnership between NUI Galway and Galway City Council’s Heritage Department will take place. Medieval costumes and traditional European chocolate St Nicholas’ will bring the year to a close around St Nicholas’ Day and the Annual Christmas Fayre. On St Nicholas’ Day (6th December), the year will close with the old office of ‘vespers’, sung by our choir, which will also host the Turas Naofa thanksgiving uniting all churches from across the city.

These events will all sit alongside the usual liturgical events that take place throughout the church year – including a pet blessing service and a school bag service! The parish has been working on the production of a Conservation Management Plan which will put in place a plan of action for the next five to ten years, securing the city’s treasure for generations to come, ensuring its place as a venue for worship and the arts in Galway and as always with the city in its heart.

A celebratory service for the 700th Anniversary – St Nicholas’ Past, Present and Future - will take place in the church on Sunday 9th February 2020 at 4pm. All are very welcome to attend.

David Jones AW13 Fashion Launch: Sydney, Australia - 6th February 2013...

A good dose of Australia's social set gathered to watch top line models including Miranda Kerr and Megan Gale strut at David Jones' Elizabeth Street store from around 7pm this evening.

Thirty-seven designers including Alex Perry, Collette Dinnigan and Zimmerman showcased over 230 looks alongside DJs runway debutants, Ellery, Rachel Gilbert and Banjo and Matilda.

Dual tone colours and prints featured heavily throughout the evening while lace and leather made a big comeback.

The 175-year-old retailer has reluctantly embraced new technologies to lift struggling sales and this year's event was livestreamed (via the internet) for the benefit of those who missed out on one of the show's exclusive tickets.

David Jones' group executive of merchandise Donna Player said those who couldn't attend could keep track of what was happening on social media.

"Customer viewing parties are a first and there will be stylists there as well. They can watch the livestream from Sydney, drink champagne and participate in the whole event even though they aren't physically here," she told Murdoch owned The Telegraph.

"It's bringing social media back to that whole tactile experience because they are able to buy the clothes straight away, the majority of those looks are in store immediately."

Well done to everyone involved in the success of the event. Now to wait and see if it makes a difference to the bottom line of the high end retailer.

Despite 2021 global mergers and acquisitions activity reaching new highs due to cheap financing and pent-up demand, early 2022 figures have shown a fall back. With growing concerns about escalating conflict between nations, tightening monetary policy and increased scrutiny on sustainability, how might deal-making need to adapt? This is a livestreamed session. At the Annual Meeting 2022 of the World Economic Forum in Davos, 24 May, Copyright by World Economic Forum / Walter Duerst

This year’s celebrations of Krishna Janmashtami (Krishna’s appearance day) was a 2-day event, on Wednesday and Thursday. Wednesday activities included Bhakti Marga Academy's lecture on the Bhagavad Gita, 108 Yajnas for Krishna, a play about Krishna that included the first Alvars (bhakti saints), a midnight abhishekam, prasad at 2:30 am, and lots of bhajan singing in honour of Krishna and His life.
