Update to this.

Now runs linux which has servers on it for iTunes and my *backup* tv shows.

I know, geek stuff. But I think the fact that the SonicWall SSL VPN appliance supports Linux is cool. And that they include a non-GUI version of the client is even cooler.

The Austrian "Linux Weeks" (Linuxwochen) consist of a series of free lectures dealing with Linux (of course), but also with free and open source software in general. As there were lectures and workshops in the university I work on May 11 and 12, 2007, we currently display books about Linux, free flow of information and open source tools in the library.

This is the poster I designed - it's featuring Linux Lass, a Linux goddess librarian, of course.

Alright, its not often that the geek in me finds its way out on this site, but I wanted to bring something absolutely awesome to light: a viable, useful, and free alternative to Windows and Mac; Linux Ubuntu.

I've spent some time with this completely free OS, and I must say that I'm thoroughly impressed. Installation is simple and the interface is intuitive yet refreshingly different. I'm running a desktop machine that dual-boots both Windows XP Pro and Ubuntu 8.04. I'm writing this on an Emachines laptop using Ubuntu 8.04.

So, what made it worth it for me to write about this OS? My reasoning: to spread the word. Ubuntu is an operating system that could completely take over the competition (with some refinement). Linux based OS' are supported by thousands of programmers all over the world who donate their time and knowledge to make a better alternative to the two monopolizers of GUI OS'.

Not only is the OS free, but every piece of software available for it is FREE. Software like the GIMP image editor and RawStudio can replace programs like Photoshop CS2/3 for many users (especially photographers). My Nikon D300 RAW files weren't even supported by Photoshop CS2, but the many free RAW editors from the Linux development community supported my D300 .NEF files without problems!

What else is awesome about Linux Ubuntu? Well, I love the very different looking GUI. Its intuitive, customizable, and very efficient. All programs are organized in separate drop-down menus, and system settings are in their own drop-down menu for easy access.

It will only be a few years until this version of Linux becomes a competitive alternative to Windows and Mac. Some computers already ship with Linux Ubuntu variants already installed, and since there is no payed license, the cost of the computer is cut nearly in half (see Asus EEE PC). Apple computers are the costliest computers on the market, mostly due to the over-hyped and overpriced MacOS. Windows computers aren't far behind, and Vista users are plagued with incompatibility and crash issues. If Linux programmers can fix the quirks (bad NTFS support, poor hardware support on newer systems, quirky behavior after major updates), Linux Ubuntu will be a viable contender to the money hungry monopolies that are Apple and Microsoft.

Give Ubuntu a try, you can download the OS here: www.ubuntu.com/GetUbuntu/download

Burn the ISO image to a CD and run it from your CD-ROM drive on boot to see if you like it. Ubuntu 8.04 already delivers almost an extra hour of battery life on my laptop, as opposed to Windows XP Home.

Try it, enjoy it, and join the open source revolution!

Flight entertainment system on a TAP Airbus 330 rebooting over the Atlantic Ocean, featuring a well known linux startup sequence.

The system offers several choices of on-demand movies, TV series, music tracks, radio channels, games (which can be played over the network with other people on the same flight) and flight information (GPS location, speed, maps - external cameras in some aircrafts).

Every seat has its individual embedded computer. The entertainment stations may reboot individually in case of error or triggered by the flight attendants.

Here I am in front of the Ubuntu Linux booth at this year's Linux World Expo, Boston. Tomorrow starts the expo and I'll be there.

Or at least the in-seat entertainment system does.
