Workers in the Payload Changeout Room (PCR) at Launch Pad 39A are preparing to close the payload doors for flight on the Space Shuttle Atlantis, targeted for liftoff on Mission STS-79 around September 12. The SPACEHAB Double Module located in the aft area of the payload bay is filled with supplies that will be transferred to the Russian Space Station Mir. STS-79 marks the second flight of a SPACEHAB in support of the Shuttle-Mir dockings, and the first flight of the double-module configuration. The SPACEHAB is connected by tunnel to the Orbiter Docking System (ODS), with the Androgynous Peripheral Docking System (APDS) clearly visible on top of the ODS. The APDS provides the docking interface for the linkup with Mir, while the ODS provides a passageway from the orbiter to the Russian space station and the SPACEHAB.

STS108-E-5069 (7 December 2001) --- Astronaut Mark E. Kelly, pilot, looks over a checklist during rendezvous operations with the International Space Station (ISS). Astronaut Dominic L. Gorie (out of frame), STS-108 commander, brought Endeavour to a gentle linkup with the ISS at 2:03 p.m. (CST) as the two craft sailed over England. Within minutes, Kelly and astronauts Linda M. Godwin and Daniel M. Tani (out of frame), mission specialists, began to conduct post-docking checks of the mechanical interface between Endeavour and the station’s Destiny Laboratory prior to the opening of the hatches on the two vehicles. 18th November 2011 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall (Front Room), London SE1.

London Jazz Festival (free event), www.londonjazzfestival.org.uk/.

Country: Britain - Scotland & Australia (Netherlands resident). Style: Jazz - Modern.

Lineup: Phil Bancroft (tenor sax/soprano sax), Felicity Provan (trumpet), Aidan O'Rourke (fiddle), Paul Harrison (p/keyboard), Graeme Stephen (g), Mario Lima Caribe (b/bass g), Stuart Ritchie (d).

Phil Bancroft was born in London and moved to Scotland aged 9. Of the rest of band, three were born in Scotland - O’Rouke (born Glasgow, but moved to Oban aged 1), Stephen (Aberdeen) Ritchie (Aberdeen, but now living in London). Of the others, Harrison was born in Manchester (though he moved to Scotland aged 17), Caribe was born in São Paulo, Brazil (moved to Scotland in 1996) and Provan was born in Melbourne, Australia (and now lives in the Netherlands). The band demonstrates the mingling of the Scottish Jazz and Folk scenes, with O’Rourke best known as a member of Lau (for my photo of this band see: www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157625811547273/) and Stephen regularly playing with Fraser Fifield. However unlike other projects I’ve seen (e.g. Colin Steele’s Stramash O’Rourke’s Parallelogram), the music isn’t a Jazz / Folk fusion. It does represent the tendency of both scenes for funded projects with themed compositions (and often a bit of multi-media). The tunes (and back projection video) exploring the idea of home, the project being called “Home: Small as the World”.

In this photo: They were joined for one number via a Skype linkup by Oren Marshall on tuba (and his son on trumpet).

Our international bloggers taking on the challenge of climbing Dunn's River Falls and enjoying it.

Yesterday Sara and I went to the US Open out in Mamaroneck, NY. Fun time, we walked around the course for couple hours, drank pepsi, ate hot dogs and warm salted nuts, and then settled at the 18th hole to watch a couple pairs finish up the course. The golf was good to watch. It was especially great, however, to just get out of the city and get out to the country, walk around in the grass, chill out, get some fresh air and exercise. I think that was the best part for me.

Also of special note was the intense tv coverage infrastructure. At this kind of event, its especially apparent how much really goes into broadcasting a live sporting event worldwide. The golf course is basically open land, and NBC has to pretty much build an communications network from the ground up, which has to support multiple fixed cameras, multiple roaming cameras, variosu camera teams, wireless linkups, remote interviews, studio setups, blimp cameras, commentators etc.. all live, in real time. I think the fact that its on a golf course makes it even more amazing. For other sporting events, such as the US Open Tennis, they all ready have much of it built. The stadium is built for media support, and so are the surrounding structures. But for golf, you're really just dealing with open land.

So, I was especially facinated at all the tech happenin around us. It was cool seeing the guerrila teams of roaming cameramen try to get a good position on the players and set up the wireless linkup in time.. and it was awesome seeing the crane camera guy do his thing. Equally amazing were the super intensity scaffolding structures they created.. they had giant bleachers, camera towers, entire broadcast studios, ac plants, concession stands and convention halls, all temporary, amazingly complex, and made out of scaffolding.

Ok, thats my bit about the US Open. It was a great day, and unfortunately, i didnt get ANY pictures.... nobody did. I guess in an effort to keep beeping and flashing down, they prohibited anyone from bringing cameras or cell phones into the club.. it was intense.. we had to go through metal detectors, and then check all of our contraband electronics at the train station. But it did heighten the relaxatlion a bit.. no stupid people not silencing their phones, and no flashes going off everywhere. Hence, the only actual "proof" i was there is this scan of my ticket.

If you have any pics, let me know!
