O falcão-de-coleira (Falco femoralis) é um falcão campestre com ampla distribuição nas Américas, em ecossistemas abertos, os quais favorece. Sua área de distribuição histórica vai da Patagônia ao Texas - na qual só está ausente da Bacia Amazônica - havendo, no entanto, desaparecido do território dos EUA durante a década de 50, fazendo-se atualmente esforços para a sua reintrodução neste país mediante a liberação na natureza de exemplares criados em cativeiro.
A espécie chega a medir 36 cm de comprimento, possuindo dorso cinza-escuro, grandes faixas superciliares brancas ligando-se na nuca, faixa malar distinta, abdome castanho, asas e cauda muito alongadas. Também é conhecido pelos nomes de gavião-de-coleira e gavião-pombo.
Caça pequenos animais e insetos em espaços abertos, e gosta de freqüentar áreas de queimadas em busca de animais fugindo do fogo. Pela mesma razão, no Parque Nacional das Emas, foi visto associar-se ao lobo-guará ao qual segue para apoderar-se de animais por ele espantados na vegetação rasteira.
Assim como outros falcões, costuma ser monogâmico e o casal passa boa parte do tempo unido. Possuem território reprodutivo fixo e costumam fazer o ninho no mesmo local ano após ano. Geralmente escolhem árvores isoladas em descampados, com 5 a 7 metros de altura, para seus ninhos. Já foram encontrados nidificando até mesmo em postes elétricos. A postura dos ovos, que são em média 3, tem início entre agosto e setembro. A fêmea é encarregada da incubação e, após a eclosão, esta cuida dos filhotes enquanto o macho sai em busca de alimento.

Encontrado em todo o brasil. O Casal costuma cercar a presa cooperativamente (a fêmea é 1/3 maior do que o macho). Em geral, caçam a partir de pousos fixos, com o macho iniciando a perseguição e cansando a presa, para a fêmea abatê-la. Também caçam peneirando, em geral insetos. Nas queimadas, mantém-se pousados próximos à frente do fogo, capturando insetos e pequenos vertebrados assustados pelas labaredas.
Seus vôos de caçada são feitos à pouca altura do solo ou vegetação, praticamente camuflando o falcão. Próximo à presa, ganha altura de repente. Muitas vezes, é possível observá-lo pousar em uma árvore isolada, surgindo virtualmente do solo.
Além, do tamanho, um outra característica marcante desse falcão é a listra superciliar branca, a qual prolonga-se até a nuca (nenhum outro possui algo parecido). Abaixo do olho, apresenta uma marca cinza escura, quase negra, em forma de lágrima. A longa cauda negra possui sete faixas brancas estreitas. Em vôo, é possível ver a linha branca da ponta das longas penas das asas. O juvenil possui as partes inferiores brancas, com estrias escuras.
Usa os ninhos de outras espécies de gaviões ou outras aves para botar e chocar de 2 a 3 ovos, raramente 4, com um período de incubação de 31 a 32 dias, em um ninho de gravetos, construído pelo casal, no alto de uma árvore. Os ovos, brancos ou branco-avermelhados e manchados de pardo, normalmente vermelho-pardos, medem 40-48 x 31-36 mm. O casal incuba os ovos e cuida dos filhotes. O filhote voa entre 4 a 5 semanas de vida, um desenvolvimento muito rápido, quando comparado com outras espécies de gaviões. Usa muito as asas, com rápidas batidas, para um vôo direto e acelerado. Além de peneirar ocasionalmente, costuma fazer planeios longos e altos, utilizando-se das correntes de ar quente ascendente para ganhar altura. Sua silhueta de longa cauda, com as asas pontiagudas e longas é notável nessas ocasiões. Esta espécie possui asas longas e pontiagudas e desloca-se rapidamente, em linha reta, através de vôo batido, embora aproveite também as correntes de ar quente para ascensão. Tem o hábito de pousar em árvores diante das queimadas, para assim localizar presas que estejam fugindo do fogo. Caça pequenos vertebrados terrestres, capturando inclusive serpentes peçonhentas; além destes animais, pesca pequenos peixes, também caça aves, lagartos. Apesar de "peneirar", caça mais comumente próximo ao solo, apanhando suas presas tanto no ar quanto em terra. Hábitat: áreas abertas, cerrados, cerradões e, às vezes, na periferia de áreas urbanas. The Aplomado Falcon, Falco femoralis, is a medium-sized falcon of the Americas. The species' largest contiguous range is in South America, but not in the deep interior Amazon Basin. It was long known as Falco fusco-coerulescens or Falco fuscocaerulescens, but these names are now believed to refer to the Bat Falcon (AOU 1948).
It is very slender, long-winged, and long-tailed, the size of a small Peregrine Falcon (length of 30–40 cm or 12–16 inches, average wingspan of about 90 cm or 36 in) but only half the weight (250–475 g or 9–17 oz). This resemblance in shape to the hobbies accounts for the former name Orange-chested Hobby. "Aplomado" is an unusual Spanish word for "lead-colored", referring to the blue-gray areas of the plumage. Spanish names for the species include Halcón fajado and Halcón aplomado.
n adult birds, the upperparts are dark blue-gray, as is much of the head, with the usual falcon "moustache" contrasting sharply with the white throat and eyestripe. The upper breast continues the white of the throat; there are black patches on each side of the lower breast that meet in the middle; the belly and thighs, below the black patches, are light cinnamon. The tail is black with narrow white or gray bars. Juvenile birds are very similar, but their upperparts and belly band are blackish brown, the chest is streaked with black, the white on the head and breast is buffy, and the cinnamon on the underparts is paler.
It may be confused with the Bat Falcon and the Orange-breasted Falcon, which have similar white-black-rust patterns below, but those species are built more like Peregrines and have solidly blackish heads and darker rufous bellies. These two species are generally considered to belong to the same lineage as the Aplomado Falcon. Two other Falco species of the Americas, the Merlin and American Kestrel, seem to be closer to the Aplomado group than most other falcons, but the relationships of all these lineages are fairly enigmatic. All that can be said with some certainty is that they diverged as part of an apparently largely western Holarctic radiation in the Late Miocene, probably around 8–5 million years ago.[1]
The Aplomado Falcon's habitat is arid grasslands, savannahs, and marshes. It feeds on insects and small vertebrates, especially birds, and is often seen soaring at twilight hunting insects and eating them on the wing. It also hunts at fields being burned, at which many birds of this species may gather. In Brazil, Aplomado Falcons have been observed following Maned Wolves and chasing birds that the wolves flush (Silveira et al. 1997).
