Despite hours of persistent rain, Eagles the won Battle Line 59…again. Sorry for the sloppy, moist photographs. Hoping next week will see a dry Eagles victory.

I saw an awesome rat tail mullet in the line at the Greyhound station.

Mooring line on a dock at Astoria Marine Construction Company (AMCC) located at the confluence of Jeffers Slough and the Lewis and Clark River - Astoria, OR.

Factoid:

Astoria Marine Construction, originally called Astoria Shipbuilding, was started in 1924. AMCC was originally a builder of fishing boats but became a leading builder of pleasure craft, including the Columbia River One Design. During the 1920s-1950s, AMCC built minesweepers, tugs and patrol boats for the military. It continues in business today as a repair yard.

During the almost nine decades of operation, chemicals used in boat building and repair have contaminated soil, groundwater and sediments. Investigations at the site revealed the petroleum, organotins, and heavy metals among the contaminants. The site has been proposed to the EPA's National Priorities List of contaminated sites.

Turning the clock back to the good old days of EJ&E independence, an eastbound State Line load thunders along the Eastern Subdivision just to the west of Matteson back in September of 2008. The middle motor is a leased HLCX SD40-2 rebuild in a former Conrail/Erie Lackawanna SDP45 carbody.

Although in practical terms big, hulky American cars are by no means practical machines (especially here in the UK), there is a loveable nature to their size and luxury, and no big American car was more prominent than the Lincoln Continental, filled with all the fineries modern America could buy.

Pictured is a former station sign for the "South Shore Line" or as it is formerly known, the Chicago, South Shore, & South Bend. The South Shore Line is still in operation today and is known as America's last interurban. The South Shore still even does some street running in Michigan City.

And then, I traveled through the 32 floors of the corporate forest, past the sea of swirly-twirly cubicles, and then, I walked through the Lincoln conference room. And then, I caught a glimpse of the long shadows cast across the street as people walked by without seeing their giant within...but I did.
