Installation views of "Broke" a solo show by Penny. Presented by Hashimoto Contemporary SF at 816 Sutter Street, San Francisco. On view January 9th - January 30th, 2021.

Limited edition prints were made from an orginal pastel pencil drawing by artist, Joe Belt. The original is available.

Surviving cancer and using art as a tool for healing, reflection and understanding has infused my art with a sense of energy and optimism that has a universal appeal. The process of making the art as well as the meaning of it, are both an integral part of the end result and for me there is always a battle to harmonize between the two – to evoke the emotion of the piece and to empower the viewer.

I love combining traditional and new media painting techniques where one feeds off the energy of the other. The visual collaboration of both medias often celebrates a bold expressionism and optimistic edge regardless of subject matter.

My work has evolved from a mashing of referenced pop art and iconic imagery into elaborate multilayered portraits and scenes that depict a more personal interpretation of my life experience, battles and passions. My goal is to lead the observer to dramatic action, putting them on the edge between what we know and what is unknowable. I’ve learned that something new will always come about when you push hard enough and the result is the revelation of a “new identity”.

The motivation for me to keep going is to gain an understanding of how this “new identity or rebirth or truth” actually reflects my life as well as the world we live in – or not.

A series of limited edition prints about the complex relationship between my father and myself, created just after his death in 2004. Using images and symbols that represent him and/or me woven together to make one.

DISCOVERY will be available for sale at the March 20 launch at Drifters Cafe & Bar in Bandra. Join me there at 12 pm for fantastic beer (I dig their IPA) and food. And support my launch by taking home a limited edition print!

Like each print in this collection, this was created using a camera technique called ICM, Intentional Camera Movement. Essentially, I use a slow shutter speed and shake the camera slightly to produce what will hopefully be something like an abstract impressionist image. When I'm lucky, I fall in love with the results, especially when dashes and lines look more painterly than something produced in the digital space. 85-90 % of the effects are created in-camera while the rest is creative changes to make the images resonate with me. I have a great printer who produces my limited editions, and I always love to visit him when it comes time to sign and ship a print to another part of the world.

If you've been following my work over the past years, you'll probably have noticed my shift from traditional street photography to fine art photography. The culmination of nearly eight years of street shooting in India has transformed my life into one of an artist, a path I never thought I'd be able to take in the world of visual arts.

If you're in Mumbai and especially if I haven't met you yet, please join me on March 20th for a pint. It may be a little early, but as the saying goes, it's always 5 O'clock somewhere. And if you can't attend, please consider sharing my work and this event. Getting the word out is one of the biggest challenges any artist faces.

DOWN BY THE SEA will be available for sale at the March 20 launch at Drifters Cafe & Bar in Bandra. Join me there at 12 pm for fantastic beer (I dig their IPA) and food. And support my launch by taking home a limited edition print!

I'm essentially a self-taught photographer who fell in love with street photography after living in India. I didn't know that street photography was a thing when I studied biomedical photography back in the film days, a career that never took off because of the sheer soul-killing aspect of it. At the time, I thought I could only make money as a photographer if I photographed models and fashion, subjects I had only a slight passion for and absolutely no background in. Such was my ignorance of photography. So when I'm asked these days which photographers I'm inspired by, I have no answer because I began shooting street photography without references. I was my only guide. Later, I studied photography more carefully and I can throw out names at you of photographers I like -- but none of them have informed my photography in the slightest. If I were to namedrop from the art world, there are only two that stood out for me in my early days: Egon Schiele and Marc Chagall. But this story is for another day.

Down by the Sea is an ode to the craft and to location. It's also the name of a cool Men at Work song that appeals to me more now than it did all those years ago when it played on 1980s stereo systems.
