The Cullinan Diamond Mine is renowned as a source of large, high-quality gem diamonds, including Type II stones, as well as being the world’s most important source of very rare blue diamonds. Cullinan earned its place in history with the discovery of the Cullinan diamond in 1905, the largest rough gem diamond ever found at 3,106 carats, which was cut to form the two most important diamonds in the British Crown Jewels.
While doing a bit of night photography I decided to push the D3s a bit. Normally when taking Milky Way shots I use 6400 ISO. This image was taken at ISO 12800 for 30 sec. to gather as much light as possible. I did need to use a bit of noise reduction but there was considerably more detail in the sky than the similar image taken at ISO 6400 (see inside). Both images were taken for 30 sec. at f2.8.
Next stop ISO 102,400 but I'm afraid I will blow out the Milky Way! ;-)

Je publie en avant-première cette photo prise lors de ma 5ème rando en Haute Tarentaise. Mais je ne sais pas si j'en publierai d'autres un jour (malgré quelques candidates que j'ai repérées ...).
France. Alpes. Savoie. Haute Tarentaise. Massif de la Vanoise. Photo prise lors d'un aller-retour en solo au Lac de Riondaz, au départ du hameau de La Gurraz, en passant par le Refuge de Turia. Cette rando offre un super point de vue sur 3 vallons situés sur l'autre rive de la Tarentaise, dans le Massif des Alpes Grées.
Photo prise au début de la montée, où l'on voit les hameaux de La Gurraz et de La Savinaz, perchés au-dessus de la Tarentaise, sur le raide versant EST du Mont Pourri, dans les premières heures du soleil (vers 9h30).
NB : J'ai choisi de faire cette rando en versant EST en espérant moins souffrir de la chaleur l'après-midi au plus fort de la canicule. Et j'ai décidé de partir tôt pour pouvoir rentrer avant les orages annoncés l'après-midi (et qui ont effectivement commencé peu après 17h). Mais comme j'étais en versant EST, j'ai effectué toute la montée en plein soleil et comme c'était très raide, j'ai eu très chaud et j'ai énormément transpiré ... Le comble c'est que j'ai également eu très chaud dans la descente (entre 13h et 15h) sous le soleil au zénith. Conclusion : très mauvais calcul de ma part pour éviter la chaleur ... 😂

His self taught singular style triggered a meteoric rise in a genre that had stagnated and reintroduced a whole generation to blues with a flourish. The music scene is still alive and well in that small Texas town. This statue by Ralph Helmick, located at the intersection of Town Lake Hike and Bike Trail was an awesome find. Check out the 'shadow', to me it signifies that his playing days are over, but the music lives on. Oh, and if you find yourself along the river in Austin at night and stumble across this monument, bring a flashlight because it's dark as heck!

Hoy dejo este pequeño mosquito a 18x en FF con la sony a7R y el Tominon 17mm f4. 176 disparos fueron necesarios y un apilado parcial de unos 40 para las antenas. Los pasos por vuelta fueron de 0.010mm la exposición se fue a 10 sg y el iso fue de 100.
Un trabajo de enorme exigencia para mi equipo actual que roza el limite de lo que puedo hacer hoy día.
Muchas horas de trabajo. Posicionar, iluminar y disparar unas 6horas. Editar, corregir y ajustar unas 2h.

In Folge von Bauarbeiten an der Südbahn, musste der Rossberger Kieszug im September 2016 über Kißlegg umgeleitet werden von wo aus er nach Kopfwechsel weiter nach Lindau-Reutin fahren konnte. Da die Planloks der BR 232 und 233 auf dieser Umleiterstrecke die erlaubte Achslast überschreiten wurde 225 073 für die Umleiterwochen ins Allgäu überstellt. Da diese kurz nach Beginn der Umleiter mit technischen Problemen ausfiel musste die Regio Lok 218 495 einspringen und die Umleiter bespannen.
Suite à un barrage de la Südbahn entre Ravensburg et Aulendorf, le train de gravier Rossberg-Kressbron a dû être dévié via Kißlegg durant le mois de septembre 2016. Comme les locomotives habituellement utilisées de la série 232 ne respectent pas les charges limites par essieux sur l'iténéraire de déviation, la 225 073 spécialement descendue en Allgäu pour l'occasion devait assurer ces trains de déviation. Or, comme la 225 tomba en panne après quelques jours seulement, c'est une 218 Regio qui fut pris en location pour le restant des détournements.

Arando txiki en el lado de Ulía y Arando Grande en el lado de Jaizquibel. Entre ambos, existe una distancia inferior
a 200 metros, lo que limita el tamaño de las embarcaciones que pueden entrar a puerto de Pasaia.

1107, 1102 and 1101 slow down on approach to Menangle Park as they catch upto 3112, then have to wait for it to clear the 13ish minute section from Macarthurt to Glenfield on the single line SSFL.
I was listening to the daily NSW Health update which abruptly finished while taking this photo as the Premier, Ministers, Commissioners and Chief Health Officer went to a Crisis meeting. 2 hours later they came back and placed Greater Sydney, and surrounding regions into a snap 14 day lockdown due to massive Covid-19 breach. Hopefully we eliminate it again, anyone affected by Lockdown please stay safe.

The Moon made a striking appearance tonight, still very bright at 96.2% illumination even though it had clearly moved into its waning gibbous phase. It was higher in the sky than during the previous few sessions, reaching 27.01° altitude at the time of imaging and sitting at an azimuth of 117.67° (ESE). The Moon was 383,541 km from Earth, continuing its gradual movement through the lunar cycle following the recent Full Moon.
I kept the DWARF Mini at a gain of 2 and collected another 100 frames for stacking. With so much of the lunar surface still illuminated, the low gain helped keep the intense brightness manageable while allowing surface features to remain visible. The full stack also gave the final image a smoother appearance and helped limit the effects of individual-frame variation.
What stands out at this point is how slowly the change is happening visually. Even with the Moon now waning, it still looks almost completely full at first glance. The difference should become easier to appreciate over the next several nights as the illuminated portion continues to recede and the terminator begins to carve more noticeably into the lunar disk. For now, this was another enjoyable opportunity to record the Moon during this brief transition after full phase.
As much as I love the animal kingdom, it hasn't been easy getting to photograph them. Perhaps this little guy felt like doing his good deed for the day because he couldn't have been a kinder or more patient model.....as I was click, click, clicking away, getting closer & closer....ahhhhhhh.......The Perfect Frog....

Funny, as the rest of the town crumbles into a natural state of disrepair, the outhouse remains...
This isn't a staged reenactment. On many of the former USSR's less modernized lines, rail traffic is still governed by flags at stations and yard limits. In this scene, a switchman raises a yellow flag to indicate 'proceed', as 2-10-0 L-3958 enters the yard at Ostashkov.
To stimulate tourism in this economically depressed part of the country, in fall of 2018 Russian Railways made the decision to operate the regular local passenger train (6697/6698) from Bologoye to Ostashkov with steam power on Saturdays. While the idea behind it is to increase tourism, make no mistake - this a regular passenger train whose primary job is to serve as a form of local transportation. The vast majority of passengers aren't tourists, but little old babushkas just trying to get from village to village with their jars of mushrooms and pickled tomatoes. This is as authentic of an experience as you can get with a steam-hauled passenger train in the 21st century. The train takes three hours to traverse its 70-mile route and travels at speeds of 30-40 mph, making 13 stops in various villages along the way.

House of the sun. For the second time in my life I had the chance to live the memorable experience of seeing the Haleakala sunrise above the clouds at 10000 feet.
This time (with two of my kids who woke up very early) I climbed to the highest point (not the summit) to enjoy the best view and avoid the crowd (event hough access now requires reservation which limits the number of people up there). I really wanted to arrive way before sunrise to catch some stars as well and try some time blending. Once again the show was worth the early wake up and the long drive to the summit.
This picture is a blending of three exposures I shot at different moments in time. It took me a while to process this photograph but I am pleased with the result. Hope you’ll like it.

Totally wrong! My timing was off with the back of the buildings in shadow, it's not sharp throughout, and I should have used a slower shutter to soften the water. Even so, I wasn't quite ready to give up on the image so I pushed everything to the limit in Lightroom, which ended up in this "grunge" effect that despite the original flub, stuck with me.
The buildings are located in downtown Paris, Ontario and back onto the Grand River. Contrary to the way it looks here, the town was actually voted the "prettiest little town in Canada" by Harrowsmith Magazine.
