I had my second practice with shooting with my new lightbox. I played with light on the subject this time after getting some feedback on my last attempt. Not sure if the background should be pure white or kept soft coloured like the sand. Feedback on this one is welcomed too :-)
I just love them .... :-))

Occasionally as the run reaches lower angles its rays will extend to the forest floor and illuminate the ferns that grow hundreds of feet below the redwood canopy high above. By afternoon the normally cool forest has warmed. The fog from the Pacific just a short distance away has dissipated and turned in to a light haze in the forest and is illuminated by the sunshine. If you look up, you can see many cob webs of little spiders hanging in the trees. Their illuminated webs glistening in the sunshine.
Occasionally a monarch or swallowtail butterfly floats though the canopy using the forest to retain heat during winter months. Brown salamanders can be found on the forest floor alongside giant banana slugs. By this time of year, mushrooms have sprung up beside the path and range from bright yellow to bright reds. Some are striped with various colors of reds, tans and deep browns. There is plenty to take pictures of here so it's a favorite place to hang out on a nice afternoon.

It is finally starting to act like Spring where I live. I can't wait until more flowers start blooming so I can photograph them.
Looks great in lightbox.

Na original ele que fez o back, a principal é dele também, e eu fiz a tipo e o tratamento.

O trat é mais escuro, só que a textura esclareceu a blend um pouco.

LIGHTBOX!
Editing negatives from 1969. The center negative is a mirror self portrait using my Pentax H1a and S-M-C Takumar 55mm f/2 lens. I still have both. The lens is thoriated and very slightly radioactive. Never gave me a problem – my third eye has proved very useful.

I've uploaded three previous photos of this wondrous scene over the past six months. Each is of the same scene, each taken within 100 meters of each other with the same camera (though two different lenses) and each is a Pano combining several shots. Yet each one is significantly different from the others. Part of the difference is because two were taken with a 50mm lens and two with a 35mm lens--part due to the fact that two were taken at lake level and two were taken atop a 10 meter rock (as this Pano was). But just as important, the weather/lighting conditions and cloud patterns changed rapidly throughout my brief time spent here. There are other differences as well--one was developed as a B&W, and this one used an evergreen tree as a framing device. In any case, this spot is so astoundingly beautiful, I hardly need an excuse to post a hundred photos of the place, let alone four, :-)
This was the last series of photos I took here, and it was probably the one with the best light.
I say "final," but in reality, I'd like to go back and spend a whole day here. If that occurs, still more photos would be in the offing. But for now, this is definitely the last upload of Spirit Island from this trip.
This is a Pano combining three photos using my 35mm lens.
As someone pointed out in one of the other photos, this shows up on the maps here as "Improvement District No. 12." I personally don't see how it could be improved upon. The only thing I've seen with my own eyes that I would consider just slightly more beautiful would be the Grand Canyon, and I've seen many, many gorgeous sights/sites, from Alaska to Europe.
If you wish to compare the other three photos, they are side by side near the (presently at least) end of my "The Northwest Trips" album.

The sun sets behind Mt. Diablo as this antique Buck Rake languishes in a field, perhaps recalling an earlier day when it served a more noble purpose sweeping hay on a busy ranch.
This old piece of farm machinery is one of my favorite subjects for testing new gear and I happened to meet the rancher who said this Buck Rake was used in his family in the 1960's before they ultimately sold it to the the present owner to be used as a decoration lining the entrance road to the golf course.
This is a single underexposed shot, double processed and fed into Photomatix for tone mapping.

Three of the famous buildings in the Bund row. View them on a black background.
Left: The Peace Hotel (和平饭店). Formerly called Sassoon House and Cathay Hotel, completed in 1929. The building has an "A"-shaped footprint, is ten storeys tall, in parts thirteen storeys. In total the building stands 77 metres tall. The green color of the pyramidal roof is caused by it's exterior copper coating.
After a 3 year renovation it reopened in 2010 as the "Fairmont Peace Hotel Shanghai".
Middle: The 18-storey tall old Bank of China Building (中国银行大楼) was built on the site of the former German Club. It housed the headquarters of the Bank of China. The cut-off appearance of the building's top is allegedly caused by Victor Sassoon's insistence that no other building on the Bund could rise higher than his (Sassoon House) - the original design was for 34 storeys and the foundations were actually built to bear this load.
The foundation-laying ceremony was in 1936, but the war started by the Japanese in 1937 postponed the completion of the building - actually the Bank of China did not move into the building until 1946.
Right: ICBC (Industrial and Commercial Bank of China), the former Yokohama Specie Bank Building (横滨正金银行大楼). Build in 1924, six storeys tall. After the revolution in 1949 it became home of the People's Bank of China, in 1956 the Shanghai Textile Industry Bureau moved in, now it houses the ICBC Shanghai Branch.
Taken from the Lujiazui Riverside Promenade on the opposite side of the Huangpu River.

Matt Granz and I met up to see an opening of Troy Paiva's photography at an open studio at Uptown Body & Fender, one of the locations in a semi-industrial part of Oakland that has a number of interesting art events. Yup, it's a body shop. They clear out all the cars, equipment and tools to hold community events. Very cool.
Afterwards we headed up to Grizzly Peak to see what shooting opportunities awaited us. With the marine layer blanketing the bay, we found the weather up there quite summery in comparison to below. While snacking on snickerdoodles, I worked on some long exposures and Matt spent some time working on a couple timelapses, which for a first stab, came out mighty cool. C'mon Matt you should post it.
Anyway this is my take on the evening. This is a composite of two exposures, one long for the fog and lights and one short for the setting moon. If you don't already know, those red lights on the horizon are on Sutro Tower and below, the Bay Bridge is just peeking out from the fog. The setting moon continually reddened, as it sank closer to the horizon, atmospheric lensing squashing it's crescent shape. When it touched the horizon it was so distorted, appearing more like some reddish cosmic blob, and was utterly unrecognizable as our lone moon.
Thanks for stopping by.
With the Summer Joust and Brickset competition coming up, I decided it was time to build a lightbox. I just used my phone camera, but the lighting's great. Happy with it.
The back ground is a sheet of grey card stock. The local crafts store also had some interesting patterned ones which I might try out.
More experiments with the lightbox and im unimpressed, color is hard to get right and there is glare where i don't want it, i think i need to just stick to natural light

Tricolored Heron
So maybe it was a coincidence but a few times, while making my biking resting rounds through the park in the early morning, you could see a Tricolored Heron standing on this single rock right in the middle of a canal. A great stalking spot for the bird!
One morning, in the beginning of the summer, I took my camera backpack with me for the ride. The Heron was standing on it's private spot with an ideal angle and pose to take a picture with the available light. Bingo!
