When I was a child in Hungary my sister and brother used to go to Rosehill (on the Buda side) and pick lilacs for our mother, since we did not have any money to buy cut flowers for her. I bought back a small tube of her ashes to my garden in Canada and buried it under my French hybrid lilac bush as a symbol of my respect and love for her memory.

I've been watching some tutorials by Harold Davis this weekend - trying to get my head around his techniques for lightbox floral photography. I have a long way to go, lol!

Thank you in advance for your views, comments, and faves. They are much appreciated!

Playing with my food again on the lightbox. Shining light through the slices really shows it off in a different way. Are you looking at things differently? It makes life a little more intersting.

This is a true reflection done in the light box. As you can see I have lots to learn but I will work to perfect it

This old church sits abandoned and decaying which is sad to see as it looks like it would have been quite beautiful back in the day. This is the side view, the front facade is overgrown with vines and barely visible. However that gives me a good reason to go back in the winter for another visit when the vegetation has died back.

As always, your faves and comments are appreciated. Constructive criticism and suggestions are especially welcome as I believe they help to make me a better photographer. Thank you for taking the time to look at my photos.

Well we finally had our first measurable snow storm here in Chicago yesterday!! I couldn't wait to get out in the storm and shoot!!

As I talked about the other day, I went to the Ansel Adams gallery showing that the Lake County Forest Preserve was putting on, and was deeply inspired! Along with often using strong foreground subjects to draw the viewer into a scene, I also noticed how he used line and composition to direct the viewers eye through the frame. He used lines in sand dunes, scars on rock walls, meandering rivers, and the lines of hills and valleys to create a visual road map for the viewer to follow.

I knew about a lot of this but having the discipline to NOT shoot is what I am learning! With digital it is so easy to burn pixels on shots I know will never work! But when I saw this scene I knew it could work! I had the leading lines of the fences drawing you into the distance, but also the tree cover to keep your eyes from going right off the top of the frame! As a side note, it was amazing to see int he midst of this storm, snowing like crazy, and practically in a white out, how much contrasting color there was in the forest!!

Enough yammering! Happy Fence Friday everyone!! Please check this one in the lightbox! ;-)

This one was harder than I thought it would be. It's Autumn here, and there are colourful leaves everywhere. I tried to take some shots outdoors with lots of colour and bokeh, but there was too much wind. I regretted not bringing a flash on my outing, but I suspect even with it, focusing would be difficult.

Anyway, I found a few nice big leaves that had fallen off some plane trees. They have some interesting textures and morphologies. I ended up making a light defusing box for this one - I quite like how much it lets me play with the shadows.

Oh, and the other thing I learned this week, is that the colours on my laptop monitor appear to be quite cool. I'll have to see if I can fix that - the first attempt at this looked great on my laptop, but when I loaded it on my other computer it was a hideous shade of yellowy orange because I had used the wrong WB. I'm still not sure that I have got it quite right, but it certainly looks better now (to my eye at least).

Sealed air wrap over a fabric covered book, with some lovely white flash highlight patterns from the actual shape of he bubble wrap. Probably a bit busy, but the pick of my photos for this round as you have no idea what it is upon first glance.

Week 6 - Texture.

Playing around with newly constructed lightbox - still working on the light placement, white balance, and general set up...

I had my second practice with shooting with my new lightbox. I played with light on the subject this time after getting some feedback on my last attempt. Not sure if the background should be pure white or kept soft coloured like the sand. Feedback on this one is welcomed too :-)
