A female Least Bittern crosses open water between two stands of bulrushes near the mouth of Horsepen Bayou at sunrise. Sometimes the bitterns will publicize their launch schedule making a shot of the liftoff a bit more likely.

The largest Atlantic Puffin colony in North America, with hundreds of thousands returning each spring and summer to nest, is located in Witless Bay Ecological Reserve not far from St. John’s Newfoundland and Labrador. The puffins near the Reserve are literally everywhere as one approaches with many skirting out of the way of the tour vessel, others flying overhead. This particular puffin has a bright, colourful beak, suggesting that it is a breeding puffin. Apparently, puffins breed with the same partner for life.

Here is a photo of a bald eagle lifting off of a carcass it had been feeding on. This carcass appears to have been frozen in the water sometime during the winter. At the time of this photo it had been visible for a number of weeks, and eagles had been reported feeding on it regularly. A week or so after this photo was taken, a black bear pulled the carcass out of the water to feed on it.

Another from my time with the sandhill cranes. The lastfew years I've seen them in December and February--there are areas in Jackson County where they must hang around all, or most, of winter.

I'm posting a couple more photos from my visit last year to the Salton Sea because I'm heading there again this weekend! I know it's changed a lot in the last year. Hope to see a lot more birds since it's January and not June.

Yet another series of Sandhill cranes from the Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife refuge in New Mexico. December 2022. Every day was truly unique and different. The number of cranes, the light, the ice, the temperature.....all varied daily.

This UPS 747 is taking off on the north/south runway at Ted Stevens Airport in Anchorage, Alaska. The Chugach Mountains frame the background while brown grass frames the foreground. They had just completed work on these runways a month earlier which, while they were working on them, forced takeoffs on the east/west runways which meant flying over the city of Anchorage. I think lots of folks were happy when they reopened these runways!

Taken 8 November 2019 at Ted Stevens International Airport, Anchorage, Alaska.

I went to Bosque del Apache for the Sandhill Cranes. There were, of course, lots of other birds and mammals, but for me, it was all about the cranes I'd only seen occasionally through my life, and always from afar. The cranes did not disappoint. There were a few stragglers leaving this roosting area pond on this early morning, so I stayed on this bird for liftoff.
