Iganga, Uganda.

I have spent the last two weeks in east Africa travelling and meeting people in Uganda and Kenya. It's been a lifechanging experience. No more, no less. Hopefully my images from this trip into another world (there is no other way of putting it really) will be able to convey some of that.

This man had a poultry-business that had started with a single chicken and now made it possible for him to feed his family and make a living. In Uganda the health & safety standards when it comes to animals are virtually nonexistent. The same goes for the humans.

If you happen to be 109 years old you're outta luck. No Roll-a-Role for you!

Sorry for the caps but... THAT ORANGE JUICE WAS UNREAL.

Recent life-changing events have necessitated doing the math, which was complicated enough to require a calculator.

To travel means to meet and experience new things. This is a good example of that. What you see here is not a cup of coffe or a nicely flavoured tea of some sort. It's goat soup. Yes, goat. To make this rather special drink you take head of a freshly slaughtered goat and burn of all it's hair over an open fire. Then you simply put it in a kettle of boiling water and let it stew for a day. A whole day. Remove the head from the kettle and voila, enjoy your soup!

Of course I had to try it. It tastes like a wet dog smells. Can you picture it?

Day 4: Today is Chris Marker's birthday. It is also his death day (he died today in 2012)

Chris Marker is a French director and he made many "experimental films", his most daring "La Jetee", which is listed above. It is shot with still photographs with one part that actually moves. It is about a time traveler who is sent backwards from his apocalyptic present to get some fuel for the survivors. That is not even a fit description but too much will ruin it if you havent seen it. If it sounds familiar, it was the inspiration for the Gilliam film "12 Monkeys" with Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt.

"La Jetee" was inspired by one scene in Hitchcock's "Vertigo" (when they are in the Redwood forest), its funny how things work.

Significance to me: I saw La Jetee in my philosophy and film class in undergrad and it really changed my life, changed how i i viewed how films could be made. I swear by this film and i feel like everyone should see it.

It is only 28 minutes long...

Happy Birthday, Chris. Your legacy is sealed.

Journaling:

When I first became ill, I was determined to salvage, at least, pieces of my old life: work, friends, activities. Something.

They say that friends of chronically ill persons tend to disappear, and I’ve found this to be true. Most friendships are based on shared activities, and I could no longer engage in those activities. No more Friday night art walks, no more galleries, antique stores, auctions, evening classes. No more work.

Finally I learned that, rather than salvaging the old and damaged, I must start over. Begin again. Build something new. A new life, home-centered, quiet, internal – even self-centered. I still have my house, my garden, my critter-companions. I can still write (at least sometimes.)

Each day: Begin Again.

Primary School students from prep to grade 6 enjoy their time at cottage by the sea. Selected by the school welfare officer to attend, these kids may have family, social, financial or cultural issues which would otherwise prevent them from experiencing a holiday at the beach. Cottage by the Sea receives no government funding and is supported by volunteers, community fundraising and corporate support to provide a lifechanging experience for kids.

"Baby you light up my world like nobody else. The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed. But when you smile at the ground, it ain't hard to tell. You don't know.. Oh Oh... You don't know you're beautiful." - One Direction.

Hello all. Haven't uploaded in forever. Sorry about the cliche tree pic but it's been a while. I actually quite like this picture; mainly to the DOP, but whatevs. Reminds me of summer too. Can't wait. The song lyrics have nothing to do with trees; but are from the most talented and gorgeous boys on the planet, One Direction. Look them up; they're lifechanging.

This photo represents a collage of my hut, the top left is of my custom built bathing shelter (indoors due to snakes), top right is my cooking shelter (insaka), and bottom is the front of my hut after I limed and cemented it. The cloth barricade is to keep goats out of my house while I was out working.
