People in many societies have a love-hate relationship with private automobiles: status symbols, functional equipment for safe movement around the land, financial burden, source of lifechanging harm in some instances. Perhaps part of the charm for British motorists is the sense of escape or freedom from thickets of rules, boundaries, and limitations surrounding one's daily experiences. There are fences, barriers, prerequisites, qualifying standards, and so on that shape a person's day and lifetime.
