"Life Compass" is 99.9FS Fine Silver, made with PMC. It is inlaid with Polymer clay and iridescent medium. It is approximately 1.8" x 1.5" 45mm x 40mm. The piece has a black patina oxidized finish, is stamped on the back with artists mark and 999FS
New life can begin in the most hostile of places. This riverbed provides a case in point. Come Spring, floods will end this small plants existance.
This scene was found in the riverbed of the Quinault River of Olympic National Park.

Oh where to begin…
Well it has been some time since my last serious post, and whilst I do drop in from time to time to see how you all are in the flickrverse, I rarely leave any trace of my being here, and yet I often mean to let you know I have peeped into your visions, so perhaps the time is now…
At first glance this seems an innocuous shot…taken with a new camera of my old camera, with my even older one behind…the new camera will not replace the new camera, but this photo has been taken using a tablet enabled computer, giving a vision of the older that I never dreamed possible…
Now this shot may seem pretty simple, a camera on a cluttered work space…if only you had a wider view…and it seems, to me, to encapsulate so much…
The Canon 5D in the foreground represents an incredible amount to me personally, the transition from hobby photographer to professional photographer (can’t believe I let myself say that), the purchase of a tool that was directed at achieving a goal, my first full frame experience, a huge step along a road that seemed untraversable…
Behind sits the 10-20mm lens of the Canon 7D, my first tentative step into my new life, a camera that represented so much to me when I bought it, but is increasingly being shunted aside in my life as I use the other gear more…a camera that a mate really wanted me to buy as it represented a step away from a “past” an into a “new”…a mate that without whom this photo would never have been possible…
And behind to the left is the father’s day present my son gave me…the lopsided desk tidy with the holes that a pen will never fit in…with a fluted Perspex wave design that a million monkeys working a million years could never reproduce…beautiful for its utter uselessness.
Under the 5D sits the registration papers for my car…which I am trying to work out if I can afford to re-register again…a car that I bought with my ex after my first child was born (she is about to turn 17), a car that I have nursed through so much, that has nursed me through so much, the both of us held together with duct tape and staples…
And behind again is the pile of paperwork that sits gathering dust…the incomplete tax return, unpaid bills, child immunisation forms, unsigned legal documents and records of a life that could have been lived better…
And behind again is the window of the home Ihave built with a supportive and loving partner, one who sees all of the above, yet is still there beside me when I wake up in the morning…

Jay and I were in Bahrain for two and a half years while I was teaching at the Bahraini Air Force. I arrived in January of 1989 and we ventured onward to Dubai in the middle of 1991. We lived in several locations during our time on the island.

Some of the first long exposures I’ve ever taken! I did this while in photography school in 2005.
Photography Details: Sneaking into a courtyard with these interesting sculptures I tried out the light drawing aspect of light painting. Here I would use an LED light to physically trace the outline of these objects, manually painting every stroke of light that you see on the tree trunk and sparkling structure in the background. I wanted to make it look surreal, as if the structure in the background was overflowing with energy. This is actually multiple 30 second exposures mashed together to combine into one ultra long exposure, with a minimum of image noise. Because I was wearing dark clothes and moving a lot, my body becomes invisible in the long exposure and only the light from the flashlight shows up! Other things like the colour and bubbles were added in photoshop.
