The middle child has some impressive lettering skills. I found these examples while recycling last year's schoolwork.

This chalkboard lettering is positioned on the front wall outside a public house. Its purpose being to encourage customers inside. These letters have been drawn by hand with precision. The clever flow of writing from one piece of information to the next makes this board hold a beautiful set of lettering. The method used to produce these letters form a significant aspect of the design.
It was a warm summer day. We were staying at a friends cabin in Sierraville. Our 3-year-old wanted to explore trains. On our hunt for trains, we came across this old railroad yard. It had all kinds of old trains with tons of character and stories to tell. He got to climb onto them. It was the perfect afternoon.
Coast Manual of Lettering and Designs, Fred Knopf and J. M. Mahaffey, 1907. Note this quote from the Sign Museum website: "Fred Knopf and J. M. Mahaffey compiled a wonderful book of layouts, designs, and alphabets using some of their own material and a "who's-who" list of outstanding sign designers of the period. This book rivals the best of Atkinson, Strong and the artists showcased in the Henderson books. This book is possibly the most rare of the top ten group and could be the best of the bunch." I can attest to the above as I searched for this book for over two years with none coming up for sale. Discouragement caused me to search my online book haunts once every two weeks instead of each day like I had done previously. Then one evening, there it was at Amazon, newly listed as a used book for $150; a steal for such a treasure. I hope to share it's contents in the near future as it has far surpassed my expectations.
