IFPRI and the CGIAR Research Program on Policies, Institutions, and Markets (PIM) recently completed a joint stock taking study of IFPRI’s experience with country programs and its more general policy of outposting research staff to developing countries. Several reports have been produced as part of the study and placed on the IFPRI website along with a summary blog here.

This seminar will present and discuss the findings and recommendations, and panel members from other organizations that outpost staff for similar reasons (World Bank, USAID, MSU) will share and compare their experiences.

The evaluation of IFPRI country strategy programs was conducted and co-financed by the International Food Policy Research Institute and the CGIAR Research Program on Policies, Institutions, and Markets (PIM).

Kids Academy Lessons at Boston Mills

There is a homeless man that sleeps under a bridge in the Community Center Park. I see him often when I go running in early mornings. People who are also running or walking their dogs would go by and pretend he was not there. It made me think about the private vs. public space dichotomy. This was a public location, but up above us is this man’s private sleeping space. The only thing keeping it private is the space is above a steep concrete grade; most people would not go up this grade, they would stay on the sidewalk. For this project I climbed up to his space during the day when he is not there and I took photos so I could see from his point of view. This audience is non-homeless people so they can see how he watches them pass below him. I would like these images to be posted in the Community Center Park building so people can get a different view on the homeless that live in parks or other public locations.

The problems I ran into was when I climbed up to his space for the first time, it did not look like a place to sleep. There was a lot of trash and graffiti; it looked like a place teenagers would hang out to smoke cigarettes. I had to accept that other people could have interfered with the space, or that this mess was actually due to the homeless person. I expected the space to seem a bit homier for some reason. Chuck Ferris is an artist who photographs homeless people and seeks to learn about their place in society. Johnsen et all studied and photographed homeless places and explored the “hidden” places that the public does not usually see, such as the high place under the bridge that the public does not see up close as they pass by. These photographers helped me see the space from a homeless person’s point of view so I could better understand the space.

Groovy Grid Lines - Final. I really love the colors...and I actually think this one looks better in person than here. I had a LOT of fun with this lesson!!

The lesson is a little bit repetitive but the main point would be "when you take a shit close the door".
