The centre panel entitled Lessons is, somewhat unusually, narrower than the panels on either side. It is loosely based on the fourth painting in Hogarth’s series, The Toilette. Hogarth’s painting shows the young wife, now a Countess, entertaining guests in her dressing room while a servant crimps her hair. Rego transposes this scene to a beauty parlour where the girl’s mother is having her hair done while her daughter looks on. The mother sits on a swivel chair, with a large helmet-like hairdryer on a stand behind her. She leans forward towards a full length mirror, her chin up, apparently contemplating her own image. Her daughter sits on a raised platform at her feet, her face and upper body reflected in the mirror. Turning to face the mirror, the girl admires her mother’s reflection. The artist has described the scene as an apprenticeship in femininity.

Zinger of the day: Nicole (who is five -- you can see in the corner of the shot) and I had the following dialog:
Nicole: "What is that?" (indicating the cute tutu bathing suit Mackenzie has on)
Me: "It's a tutu - it's a ballerina costume."
Nicole: "Why is she wearing it?"
Me: "Because it's cute."
Nicole: "But why would she wear it - ballerinas don't go in swimming with their clothes on."
Me: "Hm..good point. We should probably take it off then."

In preparation for the ship's presentation of "Dancing With the Stars at Sea", they offered dance lessons in the Samba, Salsa and Jive. Then each of the ship's professional dancers chose one of the best of the passengers to be their partner for the competition. Glenn and one of the ladies at our dinner table paired up to try their hands (or should I say feet) in learning the Samba. They had fun, but neither progressed to the next round.
Always follow through with the swing, and accelerate towards the ball if possible.
Result of the lesson: huge gapping holes where I got the ground further than the ball.

The good and the bad. Luckily I was doing a 2 camera shoot. This botched mess was from my tripod mounted D90 using a 150-500mm lens. Ouch! This lens does not like headlights! I knew I was in trouble when I saw this in the display and grabbed the D7000. The building looks cool though. f13 350mm exposure 1/15 ISO HI 5000

I'm not too fond of this one, maybe because it's so plain. I will probably go back and add stuff to it. Took me 11 min. I used an HB pencil.
After my Uncle’s less than impressive Kendo performance yesterday I thought it was best to give him some lessons.
It was the only way to bring him up to a level where he at least had the hint of a chance to beat my mommies fierce thrashing style.
Since motivation is everything, I applied the help of a chocolate cake and thaught my suddenly very willing student how to use a swift and elegant motion with the sword to slice the cake in two.
He was very impressed and asked if he could try it, but I was never quite satisfied with his blows, of course I tried to help him and started to eat the bits and pieces he cut off so they wouldn’t remind him of his failures or distract him... yum yum yum :-)
