Macro Mondays theme: Less Than an Inch
My son ties fishing flies professionally. Many times his flies resemble more works of art than for catching fish. To meet the one inch requirement I needed to cut off a portion of the legs and antenna.
This was a good theme in that it forced me to think about some of the more technical aspects of macro photography. I’ve had my macro lens since October and this week was probably the first time that I shot a technical macro (i.e. 1:1). My process for taking a photograph is to fill the frame with the image I want then focus. In doing that I have never really paid attention to the numbers on the focus ring. This week I set the lens to 1:1 then moved the camera/subject into focus. 1:1 is much closer than thought it was. My lens says its minimum focus distance is a little under one foot. That must be measured from the front of the camera, not the front of the lens. I discovered a few more gadgets to add to my wish list this week (does it ever end?). I would really like to focus stack. I have tried it with manually changing the focus points and merging in Elements. I think I need a focus rail and full-blown Photoshop (or some other add in) to get the best results. I had to shoot this at f/40 to get a depth of field with most of the subject in focus. Also, I need to construct a light box to back light flowers, etc. HMM!

Old flint wheel on a Zippo for Macro Mondays. Measured 2 cms.
Used 66mm extension tubes + 60mm F2.8D Micro lens.
Ok... I just love the fragrance of freshly sharpened pencils, and especially the Dixon Ticonderoga www.dixonticonderoga.com (ahhh... cedar wood...!!!), and so keep the shavings in a small dish in my study as a sort of "pot pourri"...
Yes, I am indeed easily and simply pleased... Lol :-)
(*This is a shaving from a brand new blunt pencil - fresh out of the box - hence the gradual widening as it spirals around**)

I found these sweet little purple shells once on my local beach, and collected all of them. But they smelt bad so I left them in the garden for ages and rediscovered them, smell free, about a year later. I've always looked for more, but have never seen them again!
This is one of the bigger ones - it measures 1.2cm wide x 0.9cm high. And the total photo is 2.4cm wide, or 'Less Than An Inch' as per the Macro Mondays theme this week (26-Feb-2018).
[Taken with my Helios 44M lens, at f/16 using extension tubes]

For Macro Mondays "less than an inch"
California man-root (Marah fabacea) is a wildflower endemic to California. It is known colloquially as "wild cucumber" although the fruit is bitter. It's clusters of tiny, off-white flowers are said to be a nectar source for the green hairstreak butterfly. The leaves are surprisingly large when mature, and the root is huge, making the plant hard to kill.

Salt crystals on a teaspoon. Taken by reversing my lens - cool technique, thanks to those who suggested it!
