Love those big paws!

One of a set of images from a recent visit to the Wildlife Heritage Foundation in Kent, England

The leopards taken into custody by forest department of Maharashtra are put at Manikdoh near Junnar. I visited the place on June 23 for one of my stories. It was a thrilling experience. I got to know so much within that half an hour. And I was thrilled to no limits. I plan to write more on this subject because I am totally in love with this animal.

The Amur leopard is considered to be one of the most critically endangered big cats in the world, with roughly 30-40 individuals remaining in the wild. Habitat loss and hunting (for trophies and use in traditional medicines) are the biggest threats to Amur leopards in the wild.

The Amur leopard has been a protected species in Russia since 1956, but poaching is still a problem. Conservation efforts in the wild for these animals include anti-poaching patrols, customs control, fighting forest fires, environmental education programmes and working closely with local communities.

My favourite big cat is the Leopard. So muscular, so individual and sooooo menacing. This large male passed by so close that i could have touched him...but I wanted to keep my hand so I didn't.

Threats to snow leopards include hunting (for trophies and the fur trade) and habitat destruction. Through the loss of their habitat, the number of the snow leopard’s prey species has decreased as a result. Because of this, snow leopards have been known to target livestock animals which then results in farmers hunting them, in order to protect their animals.

Snow leopards are protected by law and international trade in this species is banned. There are many organisations that have been involved in creating ways to help protect this species. Programs that have been put in place to protect this species include community-based conservation, research of population numbers (through using camera traps), educational programs and increasing the protection available for livestock animals.

She is not happy. She had killed an impala and dragged it up a tree only to be pestered by hyena after her supper.

Karnataka’s forests and wildlife are her priceless natural heritage. The State boasts of some of the largest jungle tracts south of the Vindhyas. From the majestic evergreen forests of the Western Ghats to the scrub jungles of the plains, a wide variety of habitats teem with diverse flora and fauna, some of them endemic to the region. Some of these jungles were the private preserves of former rulers. Thanks to their protection, these jungles have survived. However, some of the lesser-known ones are sanctuaries protected by the local populace.
