History
The use of ropes for hunting, pulling, fastening, attaching, carrying, lifting, and climbing dates back to prehistoric times.
It is likely that the earliest "ropes" were naturally occurring lengths of plant fibre, such as vines, followed soon by the first attempts at twisting and braiding these strands together to form the first proper ropes in the modern sense of the word. The earliest evidence of suspected rope is a very small fragment of three-ply cord from a Neanderthal site dated 50,000 years ago.
This item was so small, it was only discovered and described with the help of a high power microscope. It is slightly thicker than the average thumb-nail, and would not stretch from edge-to-edge across a little finger-nail.
There are other ways fibres can twist in nature, without deliberate construction.
A tool dated between 35,000 and 40,000 years found in the Hohle Fels cave in south-western Germany has been identified as a means for making rope.
It is a 20 cm (8 in) strip of mammoth ivory with four holes drilled through it.
Each hole is lined with precisely cut spiral incisions.
The grooves on three of the holes spiral in a clockwise direction from each side of the strip.
The grooves on one hole spiral clockwise on one side, but counter-clockwise from the other side.
Plant fibres have been found on it that could have come from when they fed through the holes and the tool twisted, creating a single ply yarn. Fiber-making experiments with a replica found that the perforations served as effective guides for raw fibers, making it easier to make a strong, elastic rope than simply twisting fibers by hand spiral incisions would have tended to keep the fibres in place.
But the incisions cannot impart any twist to the fibres pulled through the holes.
Other 15,000-year-old objects with holes with spiral incisions, made from reindeer antler, found across Europe are thought to have been used to manipulate ropes, or perhaps some other purpose.
They were originally named "batons", and thought possibly to have been carried as badges of rank.
Impressions of cordage found on fired clay provide evidence of string and rope-making technology in Europe dating back 28,000 years.
Fossilized fragments of "probably two-ply laid rope of about 7 mm [0.28 in] diameter" were found in one of the caves at Lascaux, dating to approximately 15,000 BC.
The ancient Egyptians were probably the first civilization to develop special tools to make rope.
Egyptian rope dates back to 4000 to 3500 BC and was generally made of water reed fibres.
Other rope in antiquity was made from the fibres of date palms, flax, grass, papyrus, leather, or animal hair. The use of such ropes pulled by thousands of workers allowed the Egyptians to move the heavy stones required to build their monuments. Starting from approximately 2800 BC, rope made of hemp fibres was in use in China.
Rope and the craft of rope making spread throughout Asia, India, and Europe over the next several thousand years.
From the Middle Ages until the 18th century, in Europe ropes were constructed in ropewalks, very long buildings where strands the full length of the rope were spread out and then laid up or twisted together to form the rope.
The cable length was thus set by the length of the available rope walk. This is related to the unit of length termed cable length. This allowed for long ropes of up to 300 yards (270 m) long or longer to be made.
These long ropes were necessary in shipping as short ropes would require splicing to make them long enough to use for sheets and halyards.
The strongest form of splicing is the short splice, which doubles the cross-sectional area of the rope at the area of the splice, which would cause problems in running the line through pulleys.
Any splices narrow enough to maintain smooth running would be less able to support the required weight.
Rope intended for naval use would have a coloured yarn, known as the "rogue's yarn", included in the layup.
This enabled the source to be identified and to detect pilfering.
Leonardo da Vinci drew sketches of a concept for a ropemaking machine, but it was never built.
Remarkable feats of construction were accomplished using rope but without advanced technology:
In 1586, Domenico Fontana erected the 327 ton obelisk on Rome's Saint Peter's Square with a concerted effort of 900 men, 75 horses, and countless pulleys and meters of rope.
By the late 18th century several working machines had been built and patented.
Some rope is still made from natural fibres, such as coir and sisal, despite the dominance of synthetic fibres such as nylon and polypropylene, which have become increasingly popular since the 1950s.
Nylon was discovered in the late 1930s and was first introduced into fiber ropes during World War II.
Indeed, the first synthetic fiber ropes were small braided parachute cords and three-strand tow ropes for gliders, made of nylon during World War II.

Hawthorn Shieldbug, Acanthosoma haemorrhoidale
Length 13-15 mm.
A distinctive species, although confusion with the smaller Birch Shieldbug is possible.
The lateral extensions of the pronotum are larger in A. haemorrhoidale, and are marked with red, while the scutellum is green and the abdomen frequently red-tipped.
Overwinters as an adult, emerging and mating in the spring. The larvae occur May-October, feeding mainly on Hawthorn berries, although a range of other deciduous trees are also used, including Oak, Hazel and Birch.
The new generation is complete from August/September or even later; adults may
become darker before hibernation.
Common and widespread across Britain, becoming scarce in Scotland.

Caught this Bushtit feeding on the Giant Thistles , these grow over 10 feet in height .
The Bushtit is the only member of its family in the Americas; seven other species are found in Eurasia.
All have similar complex hanging nests.
A breeding Bushtit pair often has helpers at the nest that aid in raising the nestlings.
This already rare behavior is made more unusual by the fact that the helpers are typically adult males.
For most breeding birds, only one adult at a time sleeps on the nest, but all Bushtit family members sleep together in their large, hanging nest during the breeding season.
Once the young fledge, they all leave the nest and thereafter sleep on branches.
“These are large, long-tailed sparrows with small heads and short but stout, seed-eating bills. Golden-crowned Sparrows feed on seeds and insects on the ground and in low vegetation. They whistle their slow, mournful-sounding songs from high perches and nest in dense, low vegetation. In migration and winter, they gather in loose flocks and mix with other sparrows, especially White-crowned Sparrows. Golden-crowned Sparrows are most visible during migration and winter, when they frequent forest edge, shrubs, chaparral, and backyards of the West Coast. They nest much farther north, in low, shrubby areas of tundra or at the edges of boreal forests….. When day length increases in the spring, the Golden-crowned Sparrow detects the change through photoreceptors (light-sensitive cells). Its body responds by putting on fat and getting an urge to migrate.”

sony nex-7, minolta md 50mm f1.4, roxsen lens turbo focal length reducer. the dreaded "purple spot" is in evidence here. I did not try to fix that in post... that is beyond my meager skills to do, and I did not find its presence that offensive. I have heard that the new model doesn't do this, or doesn't do it to the same degree.

The Sardinian Warbler appears like the most widespread of the southern species of genus Sylvia. Very secretive, this pretty warbler frequents the maquis scrub. This is a bulky and robust warbler.
The adult male has dark ash-grey upperparts and wing-coverts, whereas mantle and scapulars are tinged brown. The flight feathers are blackish with grey edges. The tail is blackish with whitish edges and white tip.
The underparts are greyish-white. Chin and throat are white.
The head is glossy black. The bill is blackish with paler base of lower mandible. The eyes are red-brown, surrounded by reddish eye-ring. Legs and feet are brownish.
The Sardinian Warbler frequents various types of warm habitats, from low elevation and up to 1200-1300 metres, and even up to 1800 metres in NW Africa.
This species usually occurs in dry coastal habitats, garrigue, maquis, gardens, but also in cultivated areas such as olives, almonds, orchards, citrus groves and vineyards in Mediterranean regions. It also needs some vegetation with bushes, hedgerows, pine thickets, and low dense forest with bushy undergrowth.
During winter and on passage, the Sardinian Warbler favours all scrubby habitats, semi-desert and desert oases.
The Sardinian Warbler feeds mainly on arthropods, but it also takes fruits and berries in autumn and winter, and throughout the year according to the food availabilities. This bird may consume nectar too, especially in late winter and early spring, and probably regularly.
Some birds sometimes defend part of their feeding areas against smaller species. They usually forage in scrub, on the ground and in low trees.
During the breeding season, the resident male performs flight displays accompanied by song in February. The bird rises 2-3 meters into the air and glides with raised wings. Then, it returns to the same perch or another one.
The territory is defended all year round, and the male gives advertising calls from perches. But the short typical song-flight enhances the result of this territorial song, by adding the sight of the moving bird.
The flying bird performs slow wing beats, making it more conspicuous. This type of flight occurs in relatively open areas.
The Sardinian Warbler is partially migratory. The birds of coastal regions and coasts are more sedentary than inland and northern populations. There is a post-breeding migration from late August to December. Most movements are short, but long-distance migrations probably occur too.

Notice: The photo is not geotagged, and I won’t mention where exactly. This is out of respect for the models’ privacy and safety, if the photo-shoot is at or around their homes.
About the photograph.
This is Kylie Britain, a model I booked for a two hours outdoor photo-shoot.
She is seen posing in a casual winter style outfit demonstrating a white T-shirt, blue jeans tucked into below-knee length boots, and a large blue M&S faux fur coat. The blue fur coat is part of their M&S Collections range. She is also wearing her own bobble hat.
While planning the photo-shoot, I asked her to wear whatever casual outfit she thinks goes well with the blue fur coat, which is why she chose to use the bobble hat.
The photo was taken on the grounds of a former garden centre, long since closed down and knocked down.
In the photograph, she is seen posing with my Minolta X-700 manual focus 35mm film SLR camera, which I have since 1985, but sadly stopped working, so I kept it purely for sentimental value and as props.
She is posing as if she’s someone, an artist or a photographer, whom is out and about, doing some photography.
Kylie is also an actress, have appeared in various publication, and have her own video channel on her website.
About M&S.
Marks and Spencer, often commonly abbreviated as M&S, was formed in 1884 by Michael Marks and Thomas Spencer in Leeds, as a penny bazaar.
Over the next many years, they moved to different towns and cities, and had many market stalls around the North West of England. Spencer passed away in 1905, and Marks died in 1907.
Michael Marks’s son, Simon Marks became the chairman, acquired other penny bazaars, and the company grew into a retail empire.
They sold textiles and food, they also sold clothes under the St Michael brand, which was then dropped in 2000. M&S often sells quality food and clothes.

The Common Sandpiper is a small wading bird which breeds along fast-moving rivers and near lakes, lochs and reservoirs in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Northern England. Wintering birds may be spotted along the south coast, but passage migrants can be seen at the edge of freshwater lakes or on estuaries during spring and autumn. It bobs up and down when standing, known as 'teetering', and has a distinctive, stiff-winged flight.

The common buzzard measures between 40 and 58 cm (16 and 23 in) in length with a 109–136 cm (43–54 in) wingspan and a body mass of 427–1,364 g (0.941–3.007 lb), making it a medium-sized raptor and has a wide variety of plumages which can vary in Britain from almost pure white to black, but usually shades of brown. They breed in woodlands, usually on the fringes, but favour hunting over open land. They eat mainly small mammals, and will come to carrion. A great opportunist, it adapts well to a varied diet of pheasant, rabbit, other small mammals to medium mammals, snakes and lizards. They are fiercely territorial, and, though rare, fights do break out if one strays onto another pair's territory, but dominant displays of aggression will normally see off the interloper. Pairs mate for life. To attract a mate (or impress his existing mate) the male performs a ritual aerial display before the beginning of spring. This spectacular display is known as 'the roller coaster'. He will rise high up in the sky, to turn and plummet downward, in a spiral, twisting and turning as he comes down. He then rises immediately upward to repeat the exercise.

They run from the northwest of Kiyomizu temple to the halfway point of Kiyomizu-zaka approach.
The total length of them is about 400 meters.
They are gentle and narrow sloping roads with flagstones and stone steps.
Along the streets, ther are many souvenir shops, the shops of kiyomizu-ware (a pottery created around Kiyomizu temple), tea houses and Japanese restaurants.
The streets has a Kyoto's unique atmosphere, so there is an endless stream of visitors.
"Ninen-zaka" means "slope of two years", and "San'nen-zaka" means "slope of three years".
It is said that you will die within two years when you fall down on Ninen-zaka and you will die within three years when you fall down on San'nen-zaka.
Please be careful not to fall down here.
Additionary, the different kanji characters of San'nen-zaka (the parenthetic characters above) have a meaning as "slope to pray for a safe delivery".

Dendrocygna autumnalis
(Black-bellied Whistling-Duck / Pisingo)
Shaped more like geese than ducks, whistling-ducks are moderately large (48 cm length), birds with long legs and necks and an erect posture. They fly with a distinctive profile—neck outstretched with the head held slightly lower than the body. Adults are easily recognized by the combination of their coral red bill, pink legs and feet, gray head with chestnut crown and white eye ring, gray (Panama and south) or chestnut (north of Panama) breast, chestnut lower neck and mantle, white horizontal stripe along the side (perched) and black belly.
Goose-like in their feeding as well, whistling-ducks often graze in very shallow water or in drier, upland habitats away from water. The Black-bellied Whistling-Duck is a colorful bird that inhabits mangroves, coastal lagoons, river edges, freshwater swamps and marshes, natural and artificial lakes and reservoirs, savannas and agricultural fields, and even residential areas with mature trees. It ranges from southeastern Arizona to east Texas and south to Argentina.

“…The nature of a man who has realized Mahamudra is cool, tranquil, and serene. Whatever he does walking, sitting, standing or lying, he always acts in accordance with the Dharma – leading a life of humility, cultivating total awareness and ever aspiring to – final release. He stays in wilderness of rock and snow, in the seclusion of forests or cemeteries eradicating his ego – clinging once and for all. Wishlessness has arisen in his heart; no vestige of attachment can be traced. Entanglements are cut off, illusions gone by themselves, worldly dharmas becoming meaningless. He is more concerned with the welfare of others than his own and is thus able to exchange his own happiness for the suffering of others. As the unity of Samsara (the eternal cycle of birth, death, rebirth and suffering) and Nirvana (attainment of indescribable ultimate wisdom and compassion) itself to him, he fully realizes that all phenomena are nothing but the manifestations of his own mind.
Mind itself, luminous and void, is the realm of the absolute. Compassion as means and wisdom are intrinsically one. The yogi continually abiding at this level of reality has accomplished the essence of meditation. Unperturbed and preserving, he experiences without interruption the Clear Light in the oneness of Emptiness and Compassion. He has made his Samadhi (higher level of concentrated meditation) become Omnipresent.”
- Drubchen Ngawang Tsering
It gives me goose bumps to think about the yogins of this land, the mystics who were known to meditate alone in the caves with very little or no food, who were not afraid of dying alone and no one knowing about it or even their name. Who were able to regulate the body temperatures at will (with the help of yoga) and thus survive in extreme climates without any aides and some were said to posses powers of flying (which might be an allegory)!
As monasticism grew within Buddhism in the early formation days, many still remained wanderers. They were free from the tighter rules of the community, open to forest, sky, gorge, and valleys and to interact with people. It was from within this lineage of wanderers, practitioners of Buddhist yoga, strongly influenced by grass root tendencies towards devotion of personalized deities, emotional expression and catharsis through chant and dance that the tantric yogin emerged upon the scene.
Yogic practices were already developed in Dravidian India before the Aryan invasion and were probably used by shamans to produce their tasks as seers and healers. With the emergence of the caste system, yoga became the means of both self-transcendence and social emancipation.
In 11th century an ascetic from south India, Phadampahad Sangyé (also known as Dampa Sangye or Pha Dhampa Sangye) traveled to Dingri in Tibet, where along with his disciple and consort Yogini Machig Labdron jointly created a practice, wherein the yogin dances in cemetery or wild place and donates his body to the spirits and other denizens of place to learn the nature of mental emptiness. This practice is known as ‘Chöd’, which means ‘to cut’, the central focus of practicing detachment of mind and body. It is carried out at night in the cemeteries in order to maximize the potential for working with fear and self-protection centered on the body. It also creates an extreme situation survival of which will ensure competence in other environments.
Yogins such as these were distinct in appearance from the monastic faction by sporting long hair in pigtails and beard, danced around the fire in the dark of the night with their sexual consorts, surrounded by demons of mind, which they had power to transform into their personal protectors were the ancestors of the yogins of Ladakh. They are also known as mahasiddha, ‘maha’ meaning great and ‘siddha’ is the one who posses psychic and spiritual powers.
Snap out of my thought on hearing the voice of Ankur and a little monk coming up, when he was busy looking around in the dukhang (assembly hall), had made my way on to the terrace. The concept of ‘sunyata’ or emptiness of Buddhism is well reflected in the landscape around us, a vast barrenness. However, the effect is calming even encouraging a brief sense of mind and body detachment.
We witness the magic mysticism of nature in the far off mountains and the tiny village at its foot; the shadow of the clouds caressing all that is on the way of its sail.

Please note:
* We did not meet any 'Yogin' or 'Yogini' during our travel in Ladakh, because apart from their secret and reclusive nature, in all probability none exists anymore.
* Drubchen Ngawang Tsering was a great mahasiddha born in 1717 in a poor family in the village of Ating in Ladakh.
* Those who might be interested in further read about the Siddha tradition and Mahamudra may refer to the books mentioned below. However, they are result of research work meant as reference for higher education, rather than for entertainment or light read.

Blood pheasants have the size of a small fowl, about 17 in (43 cm) in length with a short convex, very strong black bill, feathered between bill and eye, and a small crest of various coloured feathers. The colour of the plumage above is dark ash, with white shafts, the coverts of the wings various tinged with green, with broad strokes of white through the length of each feather, the feathers of the chin deep crimson; on the breast, belly and sides feathers are lance-shaped, of various length, the tips green with crimson margins, collectively resembling dashes of blood scattered on the breast and belly. The tail consists of twelve sub-equal feathers, shafts white, rounded, the ends whitish, the coverts a rich crimson red.
Both males and females have red feet and a distinct ring of bare skin around the eye that typically is crimson colored, but is orange in a few subspecies. Females are more uniformly colored, being overall dull brown and often with some gray to the nape. Although some of the subspecies that have been described are highly distinctive, others are not, and some variation appears to be clinal. Consequently, the number of valid subspecies is disputed, with various authorities recognizing between 11 and 15. They mainly vary in the plumage of the males, especially the amount of red or black to the throat, forehead, neck, chest and tail, and the presence or absence of rufous in the wings.
At up to two feet in length these lizards found on Gran Canaria don’t have the most imaginative name. They are quite a good deal larger than typical European lizards. As such they are called Gran Canaria Giant Lizards. Photo taken at Maspalomas at the southernmost point of Gran Canaria.

snow storm ...
The perigee full Moon of Jan. 2009. "The moon was very bright and BIG!
Johannes Kepler explained the phenomenon 400 years ago. The Moon's orbit around Earth is not a circle; it is an ellipse, with one side 50,000 km closer to Earth than the other. Astronomers call the point of closest approach "perigee," and that is where the Moon will be this weekend.
Perigee full Moons come along once or twice a year. 2008 ended with one and now 2009 is beginning with another. It's the best kind of déjà vu for people who love the magic of a moonlit landscape.
January is a snowy month in the northern hemisphere, and the combination of snow + perigee moonlight is simply amazing. When the Moon soars overhead at midnight, the white terrain springs to life with a reflected glow that banishes night, yet is not the same as day. You can read a newspaper, ride a bike, write a letter, and at the same time count the stars overhead. It is an otherworldly experience that really must be sampled first hand.
Aoraki / Mount Cook is the highest mountain in New Zealand. Its height since 2014 is listed as 3,724 metres (12,218 feet), down from 3,764 m (12,349 ft) before December 1991, due to a rockslide and subsequent erosion. It lies in the Southern Alps, the mountain range which runs the length of the South Island.
