The legendary 80 foot spire dubbed Long Dong Silver by climbers. The area has seen considerable damage from climbers and ORV. The ground crust is fragile so I tried to stay on paths already pounded in by others. Climbers of the spire will no doubt eventually lead to it's destruction. One description by a person who climbed it said, "As you hammer on pins the other side of the tower falls off." Wilbur is wearing a red coat and is the little figure you can see near the base of the spire. In the background, against the cliff, you can see the Angel of Death, another spire.
Legendary stories aside, this stone circle stands beneath Belstone Tor in the moorland hill landscape of Dartmoor National Park. It is a cairn circle, or kerbed circle, that would have surrounded a central burial cist known on Dartmoor as a kistvaen.
Various legends or folk lore are attributed to this circle but they revolve around the idea of people having been turned to stone for dancing on a Sunday. No doubt stories told by those who wanted to frighten others to control them in order to strengthen their own position of power in society. Nothing much changes!!
Great memories of rehearsing with Chick Roger’s this summer for a performance at the Poretta Soul Festival (2022)

The Snowdon range seen from Glyder Fawr, Legend has it that King Arthur rests somewhere in a cave on Lliwedd awaiting the call to save the Country once again....well come on Arthur we could do with you just now it seems!
For me one of the most beautiful towns I've ever seen, with a very special aura hard to describe, and an amazing history...
Transcription from wiki:
According to local legend, Siena was founded by Senius and Aschius, two sons of Remus and thus nephews of Romulus, after whom Rome was named. Supposedly after their father's murder by Romulus, they fled Rome, taking with them the statue of the she-wolf suckling the infants (Capitoline Wolf), thus appropriating that symbol for the town. Additionally they rode white and black horses, giving rise to the Barzana, or coat of arms of Siena with a white band atop a dark band. Some claim the name Siena derives from Senius. Other etymologies derive the name from the Etruscan family name Saina, the Roman family name Saenii, or the Latin word senex "old" or its derived form seneo "to be old".

Nijo Castle's legendary Ninomaru Garden and it's koi pond, which is lined with decorative boulders gathered throughout all corners of Japan, were designed in 1626 on the castle grounds for Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa (Edo) shogunate (1603–1867). If you have read James Clavell's novel "Shogun" or watched the Shogun TV series, you're already familiar with Tokugawa Ieyasu because Clavell based the warlord 'Lord Toranaga' on him.)
Lord Tokugawa unified Japan in 1600, following twenty six years of civil war at the end of the 16th century. In 1601 he directed Japan's daimyos (feudal lords) to construct Nijo Castle as his Kyoto residence in a location very close to the Imperial Palace.
The castle grounds, completed in 1603 (amazingly after only two years!), are spectacular, covering 68 acres (27.5 hectares) which include 86,000 sq ft (8,000 sq m) of buildings including two palaces, ponds, rock gardens, and inner- and outer moats. It is now a World Heritage Site.
Upon completion, Tokugawa moved in and hosted a ceremony wherein Japan's Emperor announced to the gathered feudal lords his appointment of Tokugawa as Shogun. Tokugawa's main residence and his new seat of government was in Edo (now called Toyko), so this huge Nijo Castle was akin to his 'country home' used primarily whenever he visited the emperor in the Imperial Capital.
In 1614 the shogun led his samurai army from Nijo Castle on his victorious Siege of Osaka Castle which ended the line of the Toyotomi family, his last political opposition, and established himself as the absolute polical ruler of Japan. His shogunate lasted two hundred sixty four years. In 1857 the 15th Shogun of his line, Tokugawa Yoshinobu, ended shogunate rule and returned political control to the Emperor as Japan opened to the world.
The legendary King Arthur has a direct association with the Castle Rocks of St John, courtesy of Sir Walter Scott’s epic poem of 1813, Bridal of Triermain. The poem tells the story of a young knight named Roland de Vaux who falls in love with a mysterious woman named Gyneth, who is revealed to be a fairy queen. The story takes place in the scenic Vale of St. John, near the town of Triermain. Gwyneth resides in the castle there (Castle Rock).
Synopsis of the poem:
The Bridal of Triermain interweaves three stories, all with a Lake District setting: the eighteenth-century courtship of Arthur and Lucy, the Arthurian Legend of 'Lyulph's Tale', and the twelfth-century romance of Sir Roland de Vaux.
In order to warn his aristocratic lover Lucy against excessive maidenly pride, the low-born poet Arthur recites 'Lyulph's Tale' in cantos I-II. He tells how how King Arthur is seduced by the enchantress Guendolen. When he abandons the pregnant Guendolen to resume his kingly duties, she swears revenge. Sixteen years later, the fruit of their union, Gyneth appears at Camelot to remind Arthur of his promise that should he and Guendolen produce a daughter, she would wed the bravest of the Knights of the Round Table. Arthur declares a tournament with Gyneth's hand as the prize but instructs her to halt the combat before lives are lost. As the instrument of her mother's wrath, however, she does nothing to end the ferocious fighting, until Merlin arises from a chasm in the ground to punish her. She is sentenced to slumber in Guendolen's enchanted castle until awakened by a knight as brave as any of the Round Table.
The poet Arthur's courtship of Lucy proves successful and, following their marriage, Lucy begs him to tell of Gyneth's fate. In the third and final canto, then, he recounts the quest of the twelfth-century knight Sir Roland de Vaux of Triermain. He has heard Gyneth's legend and sets out to find the enchanted castle. Having located it in the Valley of Saint John, he successfully passes through a series of allegorical dangers and temptations (Fear, Avarice, Sensuality, Ambition) to awaken Gyneth from her five hundred-year sleep and win her hand.

There was a legendary musician in Toronto by the name of Jeff Healey. Mike Daley is now also almost legendary guitar player (and vocalist), but he played a second guitar in Jeff's band.
Jeff died young at 41 (2008), of Sarcoma cancer. He was blind since he was just 1 year old, but was a super talented musician. He loved traditional jazz from 1920s-40s and had a long running program on radio. He had a record collection of more then 30,000 and better then encyclopaedic knowledge of all musicians of that era. His 'Jazz Wizards' played in his own club and in various clubs the city. (He started as a rocker- check the original 'Roadhouse' movie). I listened to Jeff's program often, but have only seen him live handful of times. It was always a great experience. Chris 'Bucky' Banks may have played in Jeff's band, as he is an excellent bassist, but Colin Bray was his regular bass player. This was a tribute concert and several of the original 'Jazz Wizards' were on stage.

I love the sea.
The far North West of Scotland is renowned for it's wonderful beaches, and the finest is surely Sandwood Bay. Sandwood Bay enjoys legendary status partly due to it's sheer beauty, but also because it takes some effort to get there.
It had been an ambition of mine for a while to 'wildcamp' at Sandwood Bay, and the opportunity had finally arrived. Loaded the great big rucksack and set off across the moors with Monty Dog. An hour and a half later we arrived and found a suitable spot amongst the dunes for our tent.
We spent the rest of the day walking the beach, watching the Atlantic rollers crash on to the shore, throwing spray into the air. The Sea Stack of Am Buchaille (The Herdsman) and the cliffs of Rubh a Bhuachaille (Point of the Herdsman) can be seen at the southern end, and to the north is the lighthouse of Cape Wrath.
As you can imagine I took a few shots here, and you can expect a few more to follow.
