Science lessons can be challenging in a resource-poor school, as experiments and processes are often limited to theoretical explanations by the teacher - not a lot of "learning by doing," despite Dewey's advice. So, in past human reproduction lessons in this 7th grade class, teachers had to content themselves to drawing figures on the board, and explaining steps of biological processes by listing them next to these chalky sketches. For this IWB-integrated lesson in Soum (Fatick), Mr Sagne shows a diagram of fertilization to his students, and then amazes his students by, with one click, starting to play a film that simulates the process, complete with audio commentary! At the students' request, he plays the simulation three times, as they watch and take notes.

That's my history of crochet; how I moved from learning by doing, to reading patterns, codes and instructions in books, to finally getting connected with like-minded folks online. It hasn't always been a smooth path, but each incremental step has improved my skill and my fluency in communicating about crocheting.

I would like to thank my mother, for teaching me patiently, my library, for lending me great books on crocheting, my husband for helping with photos, and Lola, for modeling my latest hat.

This is an edited version. I flipped it, so the Dalang (puppet master) and the learner use their right hand to move Hanoman's hand.

AUDIOVISUAL TRANSLATION FOR FOREIGN LANGUAGE LEARNING: NEW MULTIMODAL RESOURCES

This hands-on workshop focuses on the use of Audiovisual Translation in foreign language learning and it will presentClipFlair, a web platform specifically designed for this purpose. Language teachers often resort to video to present their students with linguistic and cultural aspects of communication in their context. Since learning-by-doing is generally considered more effective than learning-by-viewing, they try to find active tasks for their learners, such as note-taking, answering questions, summarizing or discussing the video with peers. Familiar Audiovisual Translation modalities, such as subtitling and dubbing, can be used in this context as multimodal resources that can account for a very active and motivating educational framework.

ClipFlair proposes an authentic way of working with audiovisual material which results in a product, valuable in its own right: a subtitled or dubbed clip. Learners are asked to add to the clip their own subtitles, captions for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing, annotations or intertitles. Alternatively, they can record their voice to simulate foreign film dubbing, voice-over, free commentary, or audio description for the blind. Clips can be short video or audio files, including documentaries, film scenes, news pieces, animations and songs.
