osprey chick practicing for flight he or she got some real height here practice is non the landing talons spread :-)
the chick doing the hopping and flapping is the dominant chick, shortly after the other chick took its turn flapping and hopping around. I hope I am there for the real flight.
My ma, 'the poet', who is the litle girl on the left, also wrote this poem:
Learning Time
Old stone wall giant in height
A two year old holds tight to the hand in sight
Swarms of Green with kaleidoscope heads held high
Holding breath what's at the end of the adventure of night.
Peeping and plodding along, around the curving path, not sure what's to be
Oh a mass of Green not a disappointment to see
A gentle hand on it pulls tight, not just a bunch of Green but a smell of delight.
A voice of knowledge now explains nature's way
The bunch preciously held is on its way
Mint in the making for lunch it will be
And a two year old has learnt something else for free.

“I’m Learning to Fly, but I ain’t got wings” This old railroad trestle spans the South Saskatchewan River in South West Saskatchewan where the Red Deer River joins the system -just East of the Alberta border. It is one of my favorite places in the world, I have spent a lot of time fishing and camping around there. The whole area is known locally as "Out West". This trestle was built in 1913, and was decommissioned in 1993. I had never seen it from this angle before, but was impressed how long , and how straight it is. Obviously Aliens helped build it, like Stonehenge. Oh, and I bought a drone.
Two young mute swans on the runway.
Many thanks to all who comment, fave or just enjoy looking, it really is very much appreciated!
A baby Sandhill Crane walks with his mother learning as he goes. Stopping to feed when she does and being too young to fly, trying to keep up as best as he can.

And learning how to use Lightroom 5...I am used to old Photoshop CS4 but decided to try Lightroom 5 and I love it! There is however a learning curve and I have experienced some frustration. But it is indeed a great program and I do recommend it.
Hope all is well in the world of Flickr!
Most of the family of swans at Gordon Gardens' pond, relaxing in the summer sun.
There is probably going to be some drama soon on the pond as it is quite small and there are two families there: a pair of swans with 6 cygnets and a pair of Egyptian Geese with 7 goslings. The cygnets clearly have a bit of growth yet to do, but the goslings are nearing adult size. Both pairs of parents are very protective and the swans dominate, often chasing the geese; I don't know how they'll behave when there are 9 full size geese instead of 2...or perhaps the adult geese will chase their offspring away. I believe swans do do this. We shall see.
They're popular with park visitors, although there is currently a funfair occupying a large swathe of it.

A soul in tension that's learning to fly
Condition grounded but determined to try
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I...

I used to work in a boatyard doing haul outs and painting bottoms...
Learning to ride a bike on the concourse outside of the Aquatic Centre in the Olympic Village at Stratford, London.
This guy had just started flapping around the nest which was fun to observe. Unfortunately we had to leave before we saw his first real flight, which I imagine happened soon after.

Pacific Black Duck (Anas superciliosa)
I found myself with a couple of hours to spare this morning so went for a walk around the Heathdale -Glen Orden Wetlands in the sunshine.
So many babies around the Wetlands today.
In the Learning and Teaching Building some interesting couch arrangements to allow for informal group learning. I do find it funny that a building is called a Learning & Teaching - I would hope the whole University including the research areas are "learning & teaching".
Given I've attended a few Apollo anniversary lectures this looked like the business end of the Saturn rocket!
Colorado Springs, CO - This week's Flickr Friday theme is “real” so had an idea, I went to iFLY which is an indoor skydiving facility here in the city, and wanted to capture people flying for real.
There was a little girl who was in the tank for the first time and I took some pictures. The guy on the left of the image with fists in the air of triumph was her father. One could feel the power of love in this real moment of triumph.
The fawns are learning to graze. Still reliant on momma's milk, though. Yearling buck behind this fawn. Our beautiful world, pass it on.
One of the adult sandhill cranes showing the colt how to pull corn kernels from a husk of corn...a really neat experience to watch.
after the distant learning lesson on photosynthesis, slaine thought she'd look at a leaf very close up.
