Legos Rock My World is the theme of Avondale Regional Branch Library's Summer Learning kickoff. The family event includes Lego building, bean bag tossing, obstacle course running, face painting, cookie eating, LEtsGO voting fun!

For the first time ever, students, faculty and community partners convened to discuss the benefits and challenges of bringing service learning theory to practice at OU. The symposium, co-sponsored by Oglethorpe’s A_LAB and a grant from the Association of American Colleges and Universities, kicked off with remarks from three panels representing Service Learning collaborations in Biology, Education and the Non-Profit Minor. (March 28, 2014)
So many activities for all ages on the top filed - space hoppers, hoops, hula hoops, welly wanging, face painting, hair braiding, arts and craft, hat painting, toy cars, hook-a-dick, scrabble and learning the ukele.
VIRTLANTIS is a free resource and open community of practice for language learners and teachers in the virtual world of Second Life®. We offer free informal language learning activities for a growing number of languages including English, French, Spanish, German, Chinese, etc. All of our activities are offered free of charge by volunteer language teachers and/or native speakers.
Everyone is welcome to offer a language activity at VIRTLANTIS. We provide free resources and ongoing support. We also collaborate with and promote other language communities in Second Life.
In addition to our main island and the various social meeting points at Knowingly, we have additional locations which can be used when needed.

JOHNSTON – It’s no small wonder that the importance of being proficient in literacy has taken center stage in Iowa’s schools. The emphasis on third grade literacy isn’t random: it’s a time when students begin reading to learn, as opposed to simply learning to read.
Perhaps more important is that studies show if students are weak in literacy by the fourth grade, they stand a much greater chance of doing poorly throughout their educational career, including possibly dropping out of school in later years.
As districts work to improve literacy rates, one need look no further than Johnston Community School District as a model. . Take a school there – any school – and you will find solid practices at work. Indeed, nearly 90 percent of the district’s students are proficient in literacy. And the all-important third graders? An impressive 90.1 percent, which compares to the statewide proficiency rate of 76.8 percent.
This is the cathedral of learning in Pittsburgh. Quite impressive once you are used to some of the german university buildings...

I like challenging myself to rethink the way I do things. It's too easy to let myself get comfortable in a way of working. If I do, I'll turn around and 5 years have gone by of me doing the same old thing.
I got the idea when Amber gave me the lomo for my birthday that I'd completely lost the physical relationship between myself, my camera and my subject. Photography used to be a very physical act for me; I used a fixed focal length lens, manual camera, developed the film myself, etc. Working with the lomo, which has no settings, reminded me of just what I'd lost when I moved to digital (with the attendant array of zoom lenses and so forth).
I'm not ready to give up the ease or quality I'm able to get with a digital camera, but I decided to get back some of the physicality of the experience of taking a photograph. This photo was the first of what I hope to be many taken with my new 50mm fixed focal length lens.
A side benefit of this move is that the new lens (a steal at $80 from amazon) is also extraordinarily fast (f1.8). This also gives me back the sort of razor thin depth of field I haven't had since I was shooting with my parents Pentax in high school. Not to mention it's an ideal match for the flash my dad gave me for Christmas.
Now I just have to remember how to take a photograph :)

Today, students used a series of eleven different etchings to analyze the Powhatan, African, and English cultures which converged in Jamestown, Virginia in the early 17th century. They considered six basic needs: clothing, food, housing, technology, transportation, and communication.
Tomorrow, we will examine quotations from the period to add to our learning.
