The Sustainable Learning Space is a plot of land in the Fisheries courtyard dedicated to Tikvah Weiner, the 2013 PoE Administrator, who passed away from breast cancer. With funding from CSF, the plot is now used as an outdoor classroom with features like native plants, pollinators, and bioswales.

As a major part of its effort to reinvent elementary and secondary school curriculum, Amplify is producing an ambitious portfolio of digital games, including for English Language Arts and STEM. The games are being conceptualized and developed by leading independent game designers as well as veterans of top commercial game studios. For the first time, these designers, from across the United States and the United Kingdom, are gathering at a public event to discuss this work and share what they have done so far.

Day 40/365: Learning

Another spot I wanted to photograph for this project was the ice skating park in Eau Claire. Today was the perfect day for it, since the park was full of people. I initially started out photographing a group of boys playing hockey, but when this little guy came out with his mom & dad I knew I needed to capture him. The fact that he couldn't take his eyes off of me sure did help. Watching him and his family was so heartwarming. Have you gone out ice skating this year?

A couple weeks back my newest lens, the Nikkor 18-200mm VR, arrived but I had little time to play with it. Five days later my new camera, the Fuji S5 Pro came but even the camera sat for a few days until I had time to pick up the proper flash card. Finally a night came when I could take both downtown to see what they could do. First, I was amazed to see how close this lens would let me get to a subject. The above is a tinier-than-usual geranium blossom found in a flower box in the Haymarket.

Then I tried it out for distance and put its anti-vibration capabilities to the test...

Our Active Learning Classroom (ALC) is designed to support interactive and technology enhanced learning. It serves as an incubation space where faculty can implement and assess new teaching and learning ideas.

The classroom is capable of numerous configurations; with computer stations at each table and multiple wall-mounted screens. The purpose of the ALC is to offer active, engaged teaching and learning experiences in a collaborative environment.

That's me, reading the fantastic book "The moment it Clicks" by Joe McNally. Inspired by his rough and dirty, but oh-so-elegant on-location seat-of-your-pants shooting style, I set up some lights of my own for a quick shot. There's a honeycombed strobe to the left with orange gel and a bare flashgun on the floor to the right behind the bag. I then dragged the shutter for 1 second to get that lovely fill.

It almost looks like natural light. And I guess that's the beauty of this style of lighting.

Our Grants for Kids grants continue to provide support for local schools and summertime programs. A 2013 Learning Links grant allowed Milford High School students to work on a photography project with clients of City Gospel Mission.
