The picture shows Ben Ngava, the Manager of Live & Learn Environmental Education, where I worked, in Papua New Guinea sitting on a newly made concrete toilet slab giving us some of the basics on how one uses a toilet. I told Ben that he should have a good book in his lap.
Live and Learn had an assortment of different projects, but providing assistance to villages to provide toilets and water supply was important. The photo shows one of the toilet slabs in a project in West New Britain. The village provided materials that were locally available and labour, plus a small amount of money, while Live and Learn provided supervision, training, education and most of the money. The money for this project mainly came from the European Union.
Although Papua New Guinea gets a great deal of rain (four metres a year in Kimbe, where I lived), there are many places where there is no surface water shortly after rain as the soil is porous in many places. Many people in Papua New Guinea do not realize how important sanitation is towards having good health. In many villages there are few if any toilets. In one island village I stayed at several times, I was told quietly that the men used the sea around the corner at the north end of the beach and the women to the south. At night, the toilet areas were more liberal.
The World Health Organisation puts a huge importance on sanitation and disposing of human waste. Lack of proper water supply and sanitation in Papua New guinea causes a lot of diarrhea, typhoid, cholera, fatigue and other problems.
