Denell Henderson, a Twin Groves, Ark. native, guides his horse around a curve during the relay race portion of the 30th annual Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo (BPIR) at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md., Sep. 21, 2014. The relay is a friendly competition between local equestrian teams and nationwide rodeo competitors like Henderson. BPIR is recognized as the only black traveling rodeo and was created to educate people about the history of the black cowboys and the development of the West.
Shooting high-speed events indoors without a flash was an interesting challenge, especially with a body that doesn't handle low light situations well. Lesson learned for next year!
